Hey there, I just had a quick easy question. I was wondering how much fuel a 79 CX500 Custom holds? I checked the manual on the Must Read post in the forums...and it says a 4.5 gal tank with a .9 reserve. I was just curious because I filled up recently when the tank was running on reserve, and I only got about 2 gal. in there before it was full again....Thanks.

Well those numbers are for the wrong bike.
What you are looking at is 2.9 gallons total. .7-.9 is reserve. So if you are running in the on position then you should hit reserve around 2.0-2.2 gallons.

only 2.9? wow, thats considerably less than I thought it would hold...oh well...still hit about 160 miles before fillups though. How hard is it to add a larger fuel tank to the bike? Say something in the neighborhood of 4 to 5 galons?

not sure if the link'll work, but here goes...this is the best picture I have of it, its pre-crash bar, but everything else on it is the same.

it could always just be me too...I know its not a harley or a V-Star with the huge tanks...but always thought it helt a little more, closer to 4 gals....but I might look into bumping up the size of the tank...looking to commute with it, so a little more gas wouldn't be a bad idea...otherwise I might just bump up to a CB750 or maybe a Virago in the future, for a little more power and a little bit bigger tank, but I'll most likely keep this bike though, runs well for me.

Just a warning but a bigger bike doesn't always mean a bigger tank. I've seen some tanks that you could put two of ours in and they barely hold 4 gallons.

If you have a custom as i do, changing to a Deluxe tank would be an easy change. plenty of pics and how to in the cross reference section on here. It adds quiet a bit more travel range.
