overheating

Howdy all,

My bike's temp gauge is red lining after about 2 miles. I've read through some of the other thread about overheating and I can touch the radiator cap fine (it's barley warm).

If my temp gauge is faulty, what should I look out for actual over heating? I'll have to wait till next week to get a multimeter to test the thermostat housing with.

Also, my thermostat housing is not attached to the desired rubber bracket. That bracket broke and now the housing just kind of hangs by the fork. Would that help cause this problem?

The thermostat housing needs to be grounded. If it's not attached to the engine by the bracket on Ebay your temp gauge will be out.If there's no Air-dam

">

that will cause problems with the coils overheating.

Ask in the Buying and Selling as some one may have the two parts you need.

I think you're confusing the temp gauge and the thermostat.  The thermostat housing is attached to the cylinder heads by a metal bracket and a pair of pipes.

It's possible that your 7v regulator is faulty, and giving you a false high reading.  It's unlikely the gauge itself is bad.

If your engine really is overheating and the radiator is cool, you've got a bad thermostat.  Test running the engine with the thermostat removed from the housing will tell you right away.

The temp sensor is located in the bottom part of the thermostat housing. It is fed with a 7v + supply by the Green and Blue wire from the wiring harness. The electrical circuit is completed by the outer casing of the thermostat housing being grounded to the engine and thus to the frame. If the grounding is incorrect the gauge will read high.If the 7v supply is faulty it will also affect the Temp gauge reading.
Should the 7v supply be faulty a cheap new one can be made and it's not very hard as I've just done one,

My Multimeter finally came in.

The Green/Blue line is running 10.5V DC.

Thus, if I'm reading everything correctly, I should made my own 7v Regulator based on the above link. Are there any local stores that sell pieces like those anymore? Or am I going to need to order online?

The 7v Regulator is the part I was confusing in my original post. It's the black box with the broken bracket and hanging right behind the lamp housing.

Over here in the UK we have an Electronics Chain called,"Maplins" that I can get these kind of things from locally.Radio Shack over there used to be the place but I'm led to believe they don't carry this stuff any more.Have a look in your,"Yellow Pages" as there will most likely be a small Electronics shop/suppliers around that will have the Green 5mm LED you need and the IC chip(They are quite common) and the small heat-sink(Must be used).

I didn't even take out the old Regulator on my UK CXs as they are a PITA to get to so just bypassed it as per,

http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=257

problem is they are so cheap you can't usually get just a single one on-line,

Same with the Green LEDS
