Recently I posted a question about a starter squeal and the fine people of this site came to my rescue with starter rebuilding and ground strap modifications. I did take the starter apart and cleaned everything up as instructed. The starter really wasn't that bad inside. As mentioned before sometimes and more often on cold starts I get a loud pitched squeal and the engine is not turning over during this squeal. Usually but not always on a warm start everything works fine. The Clymer service manuel shows an "Overrunning Clutch" located between the started reduction gear and the flywheel. Could this clutch possibly (if one of the pistons was coming up on compression) be the source of the squeal??? If this is the case are there any solutions? I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it GL650I    Report

If you completely rebuilt your starter, and it is working properly, your starter clutch could be going out. What happens is that over time, especially on the 650's, the starter clutch bolts start to back themselves out, and make contact with the starter gear.  This could be the "squeal" that you are hearing.  The bolt will bind for a second, then the starter overpowers the bind and starts the engine. The bad news is that this is an engine out operation (I'm working on this right now). CX500 Turbo, GL650I, Two CX650E's, and one Crown Jewel of the CX line- CX650T. Why do I own five CX/GL bikes? I think that clutch has to be the source of the squeal, especially if the engine isn't turning over during the squeal. Starter is turning the reduction gear but the flywheel isn't moving.
