You say it is not carb related, but the symptoms in your signature block would indicate that it could be.  The black box under the seat is the CDI module.  It takes the output from the stator and times a electric pluse to the coils to fire the plug.  They can go bad, altho I don't know if just one side output dropping out is common.  The only reliable way to test is to swap with a good unit.  There is a test for the low and high speed windings in the stator, I believe that can be found under the first post in General Discussion section.

OH My Friend-- I feel your pain--
   80 cx500deluxe
Same problem with a slight variation- mine runs out fine until warmed up, then wants to crap out in the 5k range on the tach, no matter what gear.
I've done some research on the 'black box' and it is basically an ignition module that runs off a pulse generator on the alternator. Internally, it has a circuit that advances the spark as revs go up.
Possibly the box breaks down at certain RPM, but it is difficult to find a new one, so I talked to a friend who has had one forever, and he suggested that before I chase down a new module, that I adjust the tension on the cam chain. -- This could make sense--
GOOD LUCK

Many people automatically assume the CDI ignition box is faulty but before you throw it away even a single bad spark plug/spark plug cap or coil can cause similar problems as can a faulty main fuse holder,
