Which front end is better, leading axle type or earlier.

I'm thinking about going to an earlier front fork setup on my 81' Custom. There are a lot more of them around for cheap. Are the fork tubes the same as the earlier type ? I just need one fork tube to finish my front fork but it's hard to find one in good shape or a decent price.
Not sure I like the leading type anyway. Had them on my 83' V45 and not sure I liked the handlng that much.
MY 79' CX500 had the standard type front forks and I liked the way it handled just fine.

I'll bet it has a lot to do with all the other angles involved so it would vary by the bike design.
When a manufacturer makes a change it's for one of three reasons:
1) Improves operation or reliability
2) It's cheaper to produce
3) Supplier change
I would guess #1 applies here.

81 has 35mm diameter forks and 80 has 33mm, so you would also need to change the triple tree to change forks.

Thanks for the info. Didn't realize there was a size difference. If I decide to change, I'll buy a complete front fork assembly. From what you guys say, I think I'll keep looking for that other fork tube.

Pretty sure the gl500's aren't bigger than 35. The 650 IIRC were 39 (custom) and 37 GL/Turbo
