If you are in a pinch, you can disassemble your rear seat lock. The hollow bolt the handle goes through is a perfect fit.

take off the retaining nut first, then thread the bolt mentioned above into the centre of the fan.this will tighten up when it hits the shaft, and act like a puller, the fan will pop off.

i am pretty sure the fron axle has the right thread if you want to pull it instead of buying a bolt

You won't get anywhere with the front axle of a gl.
With the cx the 78-80 axles are both the same thread. But why not buy the right bolt for the job.

Yeah I wouldn't use the axle. M14-1.5 is actually easy to find (unlike M20-1.5...argh)

Would a gear puller work, or does it have to screw off? I'm doing this myself soon and want to know if I need to get the bolt.
I've already got a gear puller...

Screw off is best. If pulled off who's to say what will happen.

The GL Rear axle works, but some of the tapered end may have to be ground off in order for the "bolt" to grab enough threads in the fan hub (my axle worked as is).
Bought on Craigslist - Restored from Ebay: 82 GL500I - now without the "I" -------------------------------------------------------------- I had all my ducks in a row, but they wondered off!

Hey everyone thanks for the info. I went with the M14 1.5 bolt and it worked just fine. Popped right off!! The fan does not thread in for those that wanted to know.

That was me. Thanks. Think I'll try the puller on it. If it breaks, it'll just force me to convert to an electric one that much sooner!
Maybe some WD in there first will increase my chances of it popping off in one piece...
I forgot if you said why you're taking your fan off in the first place.....

If you can get the bolt for a couple bucks why risk breaking the cam shaft end off. And yes it does happen.
The fan is a lot of plastic with a cheap looking hub. I have a feeling if you can get a puller on it you will probably tear up the fan in the process.

the manual explains very clearly how to do the job. buy the honda tool or a 3 buck bolt, its not difficult to understand a tapered fit
