I just purchased a 81 CX500 nad already have questions. Main problem is previous owner told me the right intake leaks and that is why it was wrapped in electrical tape. Claimed it leaned the engine out. So where can I get a replacement intake?
Question 2 is along similar lines. Whie riding the bike I notice a poping sound out of the exaust. This is only during a steady speed cruise. It is not noticed during acceleration or deceleration. Is the intake problem the cause or should I look to someting else?????
I'm really wanting to ride this bike but don't want to screw it up.

Honda still sells the intakes for about $40. The popping could be coming from the leak or it's secondarily through the carbs. Can you tell if the side that is leaking is the side that is popping?
Also put your location in your profile and bike type in the signature line.

I used "mechanic's goop" on mine. That has worked very very well.

The poping sound is almost like an exhaust valve is getting burnt. More like a puff that a loud pop. It is intermittent but only does it at a steany low speed cruse. Don't want to think it has a burnt valve. Is it possible it needs the carbs rebuilt? Bike has almost 27k miles and I don't know if it has ever had that done. Was wondering about the air cutoff valve?

It is very possible that the carbs need to be rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing. We have a resident carb guy Larry that does one hell of a job. And makes sure everything is fine inside and out. Most just blow them off and put in new gaskets.
Valves probably aren't burnt in any way.

I hope they chimes in soon as I would like their input. In the reading I have done so far I'm incline to think the Air cutoff valve wasn't working right and causing the right side to run lean creating the noise.

The aircut valve is a pretty simple device, and unlikely your problem. Only under deceleration will it get pulled up to block an air passage.
What I'd do first is check the colour of your plugs. Are they white?
2nd, I'd take some carb cleaner or similar aerosol (shep uses hairspray) and spray liberally around your cracked boots, and where they connect to the carbs and the head. Any noticible change in rpm would indicate an air leak.
3rd, if you are removing the carbs to clean, you could remove the acv covers, take out the springs, and replace the little o-ring with a chunck of rubber to plug the vacuum hole, and put back in the acv and reinstall the covers. Turn your mix screws 2 1/2 turns out.
ACV's were an emission device added to the carbs to prevent popping on decel caused by the very lean factory settings on these carbs (1 3/4 turns) mandated by EPA.
Disabling them should have no effect on ridability as long as you richen the mix a tad.

Ok an update as I got some time to get it out and ride it. The problem happens around 4000 -4500 RPM. It sounde like the right side only.
New sound as well. When the clutch is in it is quiet but sounds like it chatters when released in neutral. Is that normal?
