REAR END- WHAT AM I MISSING?

I recently purchased an '82 Interstate that had been sitting awhile because the final drive had been run dry and had failed. The bike came without a rear drive, but otherwise complete. I purchased a rear end from another '82, and upon installation, the axle would not push straight through the unit. The rear drive unit seemed to be just a few mm short of the hole in the swingarm. I was able to install by slacking off the nuts holding the final drive, installing the axle, then tightening the rear drive nuts, but the wheel is very tight to turn. I know it is not right, but cannot for the life of me figure out why. The manual doesn't show any type spacer, and I was told that the length of the drive units is all the same, no matter the year or model. Was I given bad information? I'm going all-out on the restoration of this cycle, and want it exactly right, or as close possible. I plan to put many miles on it, and it must perform as it should. Can anyone help?

The drive units should be the same.
Is the bike in neutral? Any chance you have a picture.
Did you have it set up so 1 pushes through the swing arm on the left side then 2 goes on 1 and pushes the rest of the way through.
