It's really wearing on me and if seen threads with similar symptoms but no solid answer. I don't know if this is related but i notice the Bike runs great when cold and for maybe 10-20mins then the tach needle waves back and forth when i ease off the throttle to cruise. Feels like fuel starvation. Im lost on this one. 1979 CX500 Standard USA version    Report

It sounds allot like a coil or igniter starting to fail to me. One of mine is electrically breaking down and will allow arcing to the side wall of the valve cover. It seems more prevalent after warm up. The rubber water seal cap may also be allowing in rain water that vaporizes when the bike is warm thus causing a trapped high humidity area that will encourage the discharge via a weak insulation area in the boot. Try pulling the boot and drying the sleeve and boot. If you find moisture maybe apply some dielectric grease to the boot to see if that helps also. UPDATE: -cleaned re gapped plugs. -played with mixture screw. Problem: Misses on acceleration. And Im almost positive its the right side acting up. Just like that. I did lower the float height on that right cylinder before i found out it was the coil. Only because the I thought the plug was fouling. I've had nothing but fuel problems for the last 2 weeks that i'm just now getting over the fact that its not fuel, so i don't have to clean the carbs for the 5th time. Tomorrow I takle the Starter clutch springs and rollers, with torx bolts and cherry red loctite. And while i'm in her for the second time this year (stator) I wanted to replace the Mech-Seal. I may have a brand new second hand coil by saturday. Anyone here from the Niagara Region of Ontario? and with a Coil. I really like these bikes. Almost as much fun to work on as my '72 Yamaha 200twin 1979 CX500 Standard USA version    Report
