Help removing HBox from 79 Custom
|

I'm removing the exhaust from my 79 CX500C and running into trouble. I've done all the hard stuff (unstuck rusty parts, removed bolts, etc.) and just have the H-Box and header pipes hanging there.
How do I get them off of the right side? They keep getting stuck on the brake/foot peg! FYI, I have the bike on the center stand.
Thanks,
Scrap

I've got all the pipes out and can move the whole unit freely, just can't seem to get past the foot brake.
Any angle suggestions?

You could take the brake pedal off. I always do when I remove the exhaust but I take the headers, hbox and mufflers off in one piece.

Yep, take the pedal off. Note it's location on the spline.

OK. I was hoping to avoid that step but seems as though it is a must.
Much appreciated. Back to work.

Well, after a bit of a workout, I finally got it done. Man are my legs tired from last night's "bend, twist, pull, shake, stand, wiggle, pound, yank, REPEAT" routine! That was to remove to the rusty tail pipes in case you were thinking otherwise.
Then after removing the right foot rest and apparantly breaking the brake, I finally got the H-Box off. I'm just guessing here, but being able to move the rear brake rod with just two fingers is probably a bad sign, huh.
The 1980 with the MAC exhaust took all of 5 minutes. That was a welcomed turn about.
Thanks again for the inputs.

Scrap, you get your brake sorted yet? As I said mind where the splines line up on the pedal before removal. To reinstall, you have to do it with the foot peg off. The install position will actually be at about 2 oclock, not the normal 3 oclock it rests at against the peg. then rotate the peg down on the spring and hold it down while you put the foot peg back on. You won't get enough tension for the brake otherwise.

Abes,
Working on removing/reinstalling engines tonight. Haven't tried the brake pedal yet. I think I loosened the pedal then promptly broke/snapped something in the hub area. I'll inspect after the engine is loaded and fired up.
Thanks, I'll take care to line things up if needed. No brakes is just not a good idea.
