starter grounding strap?
Reply Quote
I found an older post about modifying the starter for my 650 to include an internal grounding strap. Have many of you done this? It has been a couple of weeks and the 650 still starts beautifully. I should say that before I did this I disassembled the starter and did a thorough cleaning, which helped for a little while, so I may be experiencing the short-lived benefit of another cleaning. The grounding strap seems to be working better, but I'd like to know if anybody else has had similar success.

David

I have done 3 of them so far.  One on my GL650, one on a CX500, and one on a starter that I sold to Carter on this forum.  I really can't do a before/after comparsion tho.  My 650 had starter clutch and battery issues, and I just did the ground modification to cover my bases.  It does start instantly, with no problems, but whether the mod helped, I don't know.  The one I sent to Carter was to replace a starter he had that wasn't working properly.  He says that the new one is great and doesn't miss a beat.  The CX one was just to have something to do.  My son has the bike in Colorado this summer and I just wanted to resolve issues before I had them.

The last two I used a braided copper wire, about #12.  I soldered ring terminals to the ends of about a 2" piece, and attached it to the ground brush screw.  Then drilled a 1/8" hole in the end cover and put a screw and nut on it.  It probably takes a hour or so to do, what with cleaning and lubing the starter too.

Yeah, Shep, that's the one. I thought at the time this was an obscure post and I thought more people on this forum should know about it. I've had good success with the modification so far. It is an easy fix to a common problem.

I serviced my Starters/carbs etc very early on in my CX ownership and have rarely had a problem with my Main CX.My spare,"Bitsa" CX is used as a test bench and knock-about bike so it is sometimes good and sometimes bad as I test and renovate stuff.Everyone should at least just service their Starter motor. It's dead easy to do and helps take the load off the battery and the starter clutch mechanism. It's covered in the manuals, well at least in my Haynes but also,

I have 3 spare starters all serviced and painted up.Something to do in the Dark months along with things like spare oil-pumps.As soon as one of my Starters gets a little tired whatever I can just swap one on but in saying that the one on my main CX was done well over 5 years ago and has not given me a moment's concern.

My 650 used to cut in and out all the time. I did the ground strap and it works great now.
