Rear tire on a GL500
Reply Quote
Does anyone know the tallest 16" tire I can put on the back of my 82 GL500? I don't want to change the wheel. I know I put a taller tire on my original Silverwing in the 80's I just can't remember what size it was. Thanks for the help. Kevin

Same size that you should have on the bike now.

If you want taller get a 78 cx rim then you'll get a hair taller tire.

The rear tire for the GL should be a 130/90-16.  My math says the diameter of this tire is 25.22 inches.

Most of the 140/90-16 tires scrub the swing arm, but there may be a few that don't.  This tire should be 25.92 inches in diameter.

The aspect ratio of 90 is the tallest motorcycle tire readily available.  Note: the 90 means that the side wall of the tire is 90% of the width.  Diameter = width (X) ratio (X) 2 (/) 25.4 (+) rim size.

Thank you, that was the info I was looking for I'm sure I had a 140/90/16 on my last one it just barely fit. I'm OK with the tire I have on it I may put a 18" CX wheel on it for when I travel. Kevin

You may have a little trouble getting your head around this, but, in effect you may well end up with an effectively wider tyre by fitting a smaller size. Most 130/90-16 ( or MT90-16 which is essentially the same size) are designed to be dimensionally correct on a 3.00 rim, and the CX rim is the smallest rim they can fit on, so it will measure narrower than intended, and be correspondingly larger on diameter. A 120/90-16 tyre is designed on a 2.75 rim width so although narrower, its not effected as much when fitting it on a 2.50 rim. As most 120/90-16 will have a design width of 125-129mm, the effective width may well be wider than a "narrow" 130 (which could measure 128 on a 3.00 rim) being fitted on a 2.50 rim. However, it will of course be smaller in diameter, losing you approx 1 cm of ground clearance in comparison to the 130/90-16 tyre size
