Question for the Gl Guys
Reply Quote
I just pulled off my carbs the other day for a rebuild and when i went to reinstall them i pulled the runner tubes and tried to slide the carbs with the pods already attached in. it still doesnt fit. A closer inspection found that the cross beam on the frame that the stock air shock attaches to is in the way. has anyone encountered this and overcome it? i'm not using the stock air shock so i was thinking of cutting it off but my concern is that it is also there for some frame rigidity. <br>

Are you talking about the one above where #4 points to?
I thought it was just a tight fit and that some installed flatter K&N pods to deal with it.

that is the bar and the first time i installed the cone filters they were really tight and i flattened out 1 but i found that it was actually causing the filter not to seal on the very small lip the carb gives you for the filter lip to attach. cutting it off is the last resort so i will try a little more persuasion before i break out the sawzall

Can you take a picture of the area and tightness.

What filters are you running?

i got it to fit, i'll take some pictures in the morning. it wasnt the cross beam as much as it was the thickness of the frame and a loom of wires that i tied to the tube section of the frame. i cut it loose and resecured it to the center between the filters. i threw out the box so i don't know the brand of filters. they have chrome tips and wire mesh up the sides with a k&n type filter material.
I am really putting the cart before the horse on this. i will probably have to take them off again if i have to replace the mixture screws.

the spacing isn't as bad as i initially thought. i did crush the hell out of these filters to make them fit. had to completely open up the hose clamps fit them around the boots and then tighten them up. for some reason when i tried it the standard way the boot kept sliding off and lip.

Its because the choke connection is right there. the pod on the left keeps falling off when you tighten it right? you have to move it as close to the body of the carbs without pushing the choke closed. I can try and get some pictures for you of my setup on my GL.

i got it nestled in there and yes it was because the choke lever was right there. this brings me to a new question. i went to the local bike parts store this weekend and i wanted to buy a choke cable. they said there was nothing aftermarket available for the silverwing and i would have to go thruh honda. i checked motion pros web site and yeah there is nothing available thru them for the gl but there is for a cx. the oem part numbers are different too. what is the difference between the cx choke cable and the gl choke cable?

I still haven't gotten a response from motion pro on the choke cable but when i got home i checked and sure as sh*t i got the band clamp tied to the choke lever and it was jammed. i pulled the filter off and will stick it back on later. looks like my battery is toast too. charged it all day and nothing. i may have had a draw on the system so i'll let it charge overnight and try it again.

Do you have a proper motorcycle charger? These batteries should only be charged at 10% of their Amp Hour(AH) rating e.g 1.4 amps maximum.A modern maintenance/step charger is recommended.

These are a little low powered @ 750 mA but like mine can be connected to the battery whilst on the bike.On a completely drained battery the one above would take over 24 hours to fully charge.

yeah i got a good charger. its worked fine in the past. i let the bike sit for a few weeks in my very very hot garage without running since the carb was off. i unplugged it this morning and did a couple of checks before i left for work. NOW, I'm either out of fuel or the needle valves are stuck. last night when i was trying to start it i didn't smell any fuel. i'll have to check it out when i get home.

With a container under the rear wheel area you can put some gas in and then undo the float bowl drain screws(On the sides of the carbs) and this will allow fuel to flow through and with the Petcock off this will drain the bowls. Then a light tap with a small hammer on the sides of them can help release a sticky Float Needle Valve.

i got a really strong feeling that i'm just out of fuel. i didn't have time to check it this morning. i'll post my results

edit: today i learned that the internal combustion engine runs on gasoline not wishes, popped the cap off the tank and its bone dry. i only splashed a gallon in the tank for testing purposes a while ago. i'll get some gas once it cools off ( its 110 degrees outside) then put in a little bit and go for broke firing it off.
