Speedometer cable attachment thread repair
Reply Quote
I'm trying to fix up the CX500 I crashed several years ago.  I've got a new front end on it and it rides fine.
Last 2 things it needs done: headlight and speedometer.

The original speedometer is pretty undamaged from the crash.  I had to bend the mounting ears back where they belonged, but that was not difficult.

However, the threads that the cable screwed into snapped off.  (More accurately, they snapped into the cable.)

I had an idea, but I haven't had the speedometer apart before.  I was thinking I could JB Weld a helicoil of the right size on to the smooth barrel that remains. (The way it seemed to be set up was the threads were a shell around a barrel that contains the cable end receiver, if that makes sense.

I want some feedback before I go searching for a helicoil.

-Brian

Helicoils are flexible unless they're inserted into something.

The threaded portion is also part of the odometer mechanism housing. Might be easier to just buy a replacement speedo on the 'bay'?

That's really the logial solution. Take your time with buying one, one week they can be hot items on eBay and bring top $$, then demand slows the next week and you can get one without getting into a bidding war.

Remember - they come as 85 mph and 120 mph models, either one will work as the ratio is the same.

Rats. Didn't realize helicoils weren't solid.

Seems a shame to replace the entire speedo for just a small attachment point.

I will start watching ebay.  Need to watch for a headlight anyway.
Do you sync up the mileage? Turn it with a drill until it rolls over and hits your mileage? Register the new odo with the DMV?  Not sure what the etiquette is here.
