Will makes people show themselves.
Reply Quote
Just got off the phone with my mother and it seems like legal wills are the easy way to learn about people. Apparently it's a money game. My grandfather is a 75 year old war vet living on 80 acres of swamp land on a fixed income. Well 30 years ago when my parents moved onto his property he said that he would leave the land they lived on to them. Not the whole 80 but more like 10 acres. That was more than fine with them. Well in the past few years his health had declined quite a bit and my parents convinced him to get a lawyer and write out a will. Seems that somehow my aunts got word of this going on and through things through a loop.

They all are suppose to get the same thing. About 10 acres of land, whatever the other 50 acres is worth after it's sold off split 3 ways and some odds and ends. Apparently her sisters are going nuts and trying to grab any item or penny that could present itself.

You would have thought that something more would have came from a humble man who fought for his country and lives off the land besides two vicious money hungry daughters and whatever you could call my mother. All she wants is her home.

So why does this happens?

The same thing happened when my other grandfather died. Relatives cleaned out his place before I could even grasp what had happened.

Both of these men were very respected and would give the shirt off their backs to help someone and all they recieved was family members who wanted all they could grab.

From the grandfather who isn't alive all I asked for after everything was gone was a masonry tape measure that he gave me 3 years before. This tape measure he used every day of his live working as a mason in Kalmazoo Michigan till he retired. I suppose I could have had more but who needs material items and money when it doesn't bring back what is gone. I have learned a lot from both of these men so why is it that people are obsessed with the material possessions and not what was learned or experience when they were alive?

Oh i'm not down. Just glad that I have free nights and weekends since it was only a one hour and thirty minute conversation with my mom. If my phone hadn't died who knows how long it would have been.

Before it died my mom told me they were going to make a will soon to and wanted to know what I wanted. What's to want. My dad hunts and fishes and I use to and my brother doesn't like either sport. All that's left after that is a fourwheeler, truck and car. Sure if they died tomorrow there might be a shiny bad thing but I had to remind her that those items are all consumables. What's a chevy S10 and Aveo in a more realistic 20 years.

I just wish when my grandfather was sick that it wasn't myself and my brother visiting him out of his 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren.

Now he does have a yamaha motorcycle somewhere under a pile. It's only been disassembled in an outside shed since Elvis died. It was his only sons and when he died it had to be put in a box in pieces.

Sorry about your loss.  At least now you know why so many people leave their worldly worth to their pets.  A man's dog is the only animal in the world that can be counted on to give it's life for you, can't think of too many two legged critters you can say that about.  The BEST relative in the world is a distant relative IMHO.

My wife's mom has 2 sisters, gramma's body wasn't cold and the other two were riffling through jewelry boxes claiming "mine mine mine!"

Pretty sad.

When my gramma died 5 years ago, she left each of the grand kids about $10k ($80k total), and an unknown amount to my mom and dad (last surviving child).

Mom and dad took care of her and her investments for the last 15 years or so, I immediately offered to give my share to them, which they declined, but you should have seen how uncomfortable my 4 brothers suddenly became....

I could of used the money, but didn't need it, and eventually I'd probably get when my 'rent passed on.

We're stuck with our relatives. It's sure good that we get to pick our friends.

I saw that greed in my wife's family a couple of years ago. The last parent died and left quite a bit. Farm and machinery worth probably about a million. There was a will leaving evertything to the unmarried son who had looked after the parents pretty well all his life. Seemed fair to me. But his married sister decided to get a lawyer and contest the will. Result? You've guessed it. By the time the lawyers and courts got finished there wasn't anything left. The sister is O.K. because she has a wealthy husband. But the son has nothing. No farm. No money and no future. He's about sixty, mildly retarded and never went to school much. But he was a good farmer and took good care of his parents until they died. Of course most of the relatives took sides and now some aren't speaking to some of the others. Ita's a good thing my wife and I live several hundred miles away and never had much to do with that branch of her family.

I'm new here, so if I make some mistakes of some kind I hope that someone will correct me and point me in the right direction. I haven't ridden a bike for a lot of years and just bought a 1983 GL650i Silverwing in pretty good shape. I've never owned or ridden any Honda before, so I'll probably need some help with some of the maintenance and such. I've spent a few hours brosing this site and it looks like a bunch of really good people hang out here. Thanks for letting me join.

I second the welcome.

I have a feeling this might be the next section of reality tv.
Maybe I should make a pitch.

Take a wealthy or semi well off person and stage their death. Something where a body isn't present. Put cameras all around the house and see what happens.

On kicker from when my grandfather died 3 years ago. I use to fish with him all summer on this little private lake that required a boat. I was promised that no matter what happened I would be able to use the boat and motor. I went out to the lake once and the motor was missing. It's private shoot on sight so I knew it wasn't a normal theft.  I cam back a few days later with oars and the damn boat was gone.  My grandmother tracked down the boat and motor some how and two weeks later it was all gone again. Thank god my uncle had a spare 12 foot john boat that he didn't need so I could fish where I fished with my grandfather.

Thanks for the welcoming messages. I've tried to post an avatar/photo and a signature line but the system won't allow me to just now. I get some error message that I don't really understand.  I'll try again later. In the meantime I'm going to spend some time browsing the tech posts so that I won't be asking questions that have already been answered. There's a driving rainstorms, with a cold wind just now, so no riding for a while. Watch out in Saskatchewan. I think this gale is heading your way.

I'm not going to get into any stories as I don't need certain family members stumbling on my posts in the future.

But has anyone noticed one common trait to all the greed stories?  A certain gender?

I really need to make out a will and I'm beside myself as whether to name any family members or just go with friends and charity.  I know one of my sisters (disowned) had recently been talking to her daughters about my net worth along with other disturbing things.  That's one corner of the family I don't want a dime going to which is all the more reason to get off my ass and get a will written up.

I really should count my blessings.  I have an older brother who is quite successful.  I, OTOH, always seemed to be three paychecks away from being homeless.  My brother married a women who retired after a very good career.  My brother's not ready to retire yet because he's having a lot more fun now near the top of the heap than he did when he was at the bottom.  He's probably a millionaire now.

Originally my father intended that I would get everything except we would split this house I'm in now.  The difference was partially due to the difference in our relationships with my father:  I was close, my brother was distant.  When either of my parents got sick or injured, I was the one they called, since I'm a RN.  And while my brother always paid his half of our joint gifts to my parents, I was always the one who did the installation.

So when my dad got diagnosed with cancer, I guess he considered the situation and somehow got my brother to agree to relinquish his claim on *everything*.  I was to get it all, including the house.  The amazing thing was that he was cool with it.  My father's position was that he loved us both equally but my brother didn't need anything... he was already set.

My father went on to list all of his bank accounts jointly with me, with full rights of survivorship.  He did the same with the deed to the house.  I got him to sign over his car to me.  When I came down for Christmas, I saw that my father's health was too fragile to leave him by himself, so I took a leave of absence and stayed.

As it turned out, my father had a few life insurance policies that he'd left my mother as beneficiary.  Well, she died in 2005.  So that meant the insurance company divided the money between the two of us.  My brother handed over his half to me!  He knew my father's intentions and honored them without bitching about it.  My estimation of my brother as a honorable man rose quite a bit.  Not many people could have done as he did.

So they're not all money grubbing.  But some are.  The other side of my family has a track record that could probably beat yours.

I'm sorry for the loss of your grandfather.  I'm also sorry for the strife in your family.

Jay, that story makes me have at least a little hope for the future. I dont' think there'll be a problem when my parents die, but my wife and her brother and parents are a whole other story. My wife's brother is the youngest and an extremely selfish bastard who treats her like crap, and her parents (mainly mom) won't hear anything bad about the kid because he's the "baby" of the family. I think whatever happens is going to be ugly, I'm really not looking forward to it at all.

Nope, I haven't worked a day since the week before Christmas.  I actually resigned my position in May.  In the meanwhile, I've been picky as hell about what work I'm willing to do.  I'm looking specifically for exactly what I left: a weekender position on an orthopedic unit.  We have a small orthopedic hospital about 20 miles from my house that I'm told is a good place to work.  The problem is finding an opening.  But I've spoken with their manager and she knows I exist.  I figure if I wait long enough, something will break loose.  In the meanwhile, I live at the beach, sleep late, do what I want.  Money is not a problem but I can't stay unemployed forever or it will be a problem on down the road.

The distance from Charlotte, NC to Topsail Beach, NC is about 250 miles.  It took a good 4 and a half hours to drive it.

The only thing I don't like about living here is the relative isolation.  Even the grocery store is 8 miles down the road.  And most of my friends are 250 miles away.

Yeah, I know.  WAH!

Sorry for the world's , people's messed up state of affairs Blindstich.
Heres a feelgood, true story.---My auntinlaw. who died @5 years ago, was a Daughter of Charity Nun, -she joined right out of high school in the 40's.
She was a smart woman who the Church trained to be a CEO.--she was the Executive ,President and Religious leaderof a Catholic Hospital, St. Agnes in Baltimore.
The amount of GOOD she did in the world in her life is incalculable.
When she died, ALL of her earthly, worldly posessions could fit into a 24 x 24" box. probably less.
My wife and I were honored to keep, in guardianship ,one of her most prized possessions,- her Bible.
I think on her, and whenever I'm weak, mean. greedy. petty,etc.-- and realize possessions, wealth really mean very little in the end.
Godbless the Beautiful people, like her, in the world.....

I plan on doing things the way my uncle did it. He seemed to know in the last 5 years of his life he wouldn't be around much longer, and started giving away all his things to the people he wanted to see have them. Not all at once, it was so slow and gradual I never realized what he was doing until he died, but it saved a lot of hurt feelings and kept the greedy people from being greedy.

BillRod, I have seen a picture if you in your cowboy hat. I must say the lack of teeth and the enormous crop of wrinkles (furrows) was becoming!

For myself my wife & I have identical wills. If either goes before the other all goes to the other. After that all will be split equally between son & daughter. Most of my 8 grandchildren are too young yet for specific bequeaths so their parents will take care of them. I do plan on starting a give-away program shortly, we have a lot of "stuff" from 48 years of marriage. Of course most of it is junk but every now and then we find something good to give away.

I now realize my plan to live forever is simply not going to work, However, I will stretch it for as long as I can!
