Steering problem on CX650 E
Reply Quote
So I recently had to drop the bike when I was hit by a car. I have been on a parts search lately and thought I had figured out everything I need to get until I started up the bike last night and rode it around the yard to make sure she still ran and no other major things were wrong with the bike.

Well I noticed that the forks will actually hit the left and right side of the tank when I turn the steering from right to left.

When the bike was dropped the forks did dent the front right side of the tank pretty bad from when the bike was jammed into the ground.

What does this suggest I need in terms of parts?

Is this just a steering head bearing that creates the locks on the steering so you can't turn the forks enough to whack each side of the tank when turning?

Or what other parts do I need to replace to fix this problem.

Thanks for the help guys.
My first motorcycle I have ever owned and rode:

Ontario, have this checked out by a collision repair expert also.
Frame- make sure its not bent in the head and front area; triple tree-may be bent (new tree and steering bearings) forks ( costlyly to replace and may be bent)
With bent. compromised major parts like this, the bike (if bent) may never be right without very costly rehab.
Check it out and estimate it out before proceding. Is it right costwise????

My 5 cents (or kopeek :) ):
1)You need a flat stretch of road and a bucket of water. Wet wheels and Bike Rental. Could see the trail on the same line - all is well.
2) Normally, the top tube can not touch the tank. If this has happened - must be checked from cheap to expensive - check the top tube (with disassembly fork) on the presence of bending. OK? - Then you can try to replace the triple tree. Again the test "the water and asphalt." OK? - You have won. No? - You should check the frame for service.

I'm with Sam.

If you went down at highway speed (I believe you said you did) then the forces that bent your brake pedal did not act on only that point. The energy was 225 kilos times 100KMH or roughly translated A LOT. Every point of contact your bike had with the ground on it's slide exceeded design limits for that component. I know this because I dumped my bike last May right in front of my house going about 10 KMH.Bent the bars, broke lights, scraped the fairing,, It still doesn't feel the same.

I don't really know where to refer you in your neck of the woods, but you could call Brian at B Design.
I know he is an enthusiast and since he is in Kitchener, he may be able to refer you to someone local who could give you fair and honest answers to the difficult questions. It may help if you mention me and the Forum since I have had dealings with him in the past and found him knowledgeable and helpful.  BDesigns - Vintage Motorcycle Decals and Restorations

I do have some of what you need for repairs, but I'd have at least one professional opinion to help you determine the point of diminishing returns.(Is this gonna be worth what it's going to cost OR how good can I fix it for this much)
This point of course is composed of many variables not the least of which is the size of your bank account or your desire to ride the Twisted Twin as well as other less important considerations like style comfort and safety, that only you can prioritize.

In the end, remember...opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.( Don't believe me? just post a question here asking what oil to use in your CX) Listen to advise, then decide what is best for you.
