Front Brakes for my CX 500
Reply Quote
I hope someone could help me out. The front brakes on my bike were a little stiff, almost like the fluid pressure wasn't lettingup. I put new fluid in the MC and bled the old out of the lines. Boy did this require a lot of pumping of the brakes to build pressure again !

The problem still existed, so I took the front caliper off and disconnected the line. I then squeezed the caliper piston by hand and it was moving with eaze. Is it possible that the rail that the pads rest on could need a simple cleaning of greasing ? Also could I have a problem with my MC ? Trying to make things operable, while on a cheap budget at the moment.

I had a brake line on my GL500 collapse internally and had a simmilar result. If you take the cap off th MC then you just crack the bleerer screw loose the caliper the fluid should drip out freely. If not you may have a restriction in the line. You also need to make sure the sliders move freely in the caliper. If not you need to take them out and clean and lube them. If none of this works then I would look at the master cylinder as the cause. Kevin

While waiting for a reply, I went outside and by researching a post on a MC. I learned of how to take the resivoure off, so I decided - hey it was simple enough :-)

There was alot of crud in it. I cleaned it out and put it back together. I will say that when I bled the brakes, it sprayed fluid out very freely.

Which sliders are you taking about ? The one where the caliper bolts to the forks ?

Yes they should float freely.

Hi, just got done reassembling my GL's front brake system with new caliper seals and dust seals. If your system seems to hang up you might have stuck pistons in the caliper, but I'd do some quick checks on the MC first. There are 2 holes along the centerline of the MC bore opening into the reservoir, both need to be clear in order for the brakes to work properly. On my system the smaller hole needed quite a bit of picking and scraping to open up. A micro drill bit set and some old guitar strings also helped clear them up. When the system is working properly you should see a moderate surge of fluid come up the reservoir as you first press the lever. Also, when bleeding rememeber that the air bubbles seek the high points of the system. I had to flop my wheel to one side to get the air bubbles out of the caliper, and over to the other side to try to get the MC body higher than the banjo fitting. Twas a bit of a hassle, but much better than systems with a banjo junction at the base of the triple clamps. Removing the banjo crush washers to either replace or heat with a torch will also help you avoid leaks. Lubricate the sliders on the caliper with some brake grease and maybe clean the pad retaining pins with scotchbrite pads and you should be good to go.

Have fun,

If only more than 1 would run correctly at any given time I'd be set.
