starting troubles

ok i have got no idea whats wrong. my bike is very temperamental. it runs great when
i can get it to start but lately its been real hard to start. it will usually start after it backfires
one good time. ive done everything imaginable to this old bike i can think of. its had three
stator replacements, three cdi replacements, cam chain and every bit that goes along
with the chain, cleaned carbs twice now, cleaned all of the oil pump assembly, air filter,
cleaned fuel tank and use premium fuel, thermostat, flushed radiator, new fan.
ive got to be missing something. to me it seems it should be good to go. and it is once
it gets started. the starter spins strong and quickly and the battery seems good too. i want
to use this bike as my ride to and from work but with this starting problem, its making it hard.
   any thoughts?????????

the motor was out. can it be done without taking it out. im just
thinking the cables would be the tough part.

It's not that bad, there is a thread on how to do it by Larry the carb guru, but I can't seem to find it.  Maybe someone reading this has it book marked and can post the link.

Carbs can be taken off without taking the engine out.Don't remove the Air-filter side Carb boots though as you don't need to and they are a PITA to get back in.Cables etc are easy once you have done them a couple times.

Plenty of cleaning tips here,

and setting the exact and correct float heights is paramount to food starting and good running.

Also no mention if you have changed the coils and plug caps?

See here for cheap replacements coils.

It its fine once you get her running it sounds like a weak spark to me
As the ignition relies on magnets spinning past coils, the power builds with revs
Just a guess but
Try disconnecting the black/white wire from the CDI just before starting
if it makes any difference you may have a build up of crud on the kill switch
which is shorting Stator power to ground
Re the plug caps.
stick a meter in each end and see of you get about 5Kohms
If you get lots more the resistors may be burnt out, that wont help.

3 Stators? ouch !
Just for the hell of it, do a quick resistance test and note the readings.
also check all the ignition connectors for bad contacts and the coils are
well grounded to the frame/battery negative.
A DC CDI output test during cranking may give some clues as well

thanks everyone for the advise. ill get on that asap. I'm not gonna give up on
her yet. have gotten very frustrated lately with the bike and even thought about
selling it at times. but with all that Ive done with it i know it shouldn't take much
more to make this a good bike once again.
by the way, i had trouble getting on here earlier. it was saying the site was down.
 anyways, it seems fine now.
