Jet size for carbs
Reply Quote
So Im pulling off the H-Box and putting on a set of emgo shorty mufflers. I am also pulling out the airbox and putting on a set of pod filters. I dont know when the guy who had the bike last rebuilt the carbs so I am going to do that as well. My question is how do I know what size jets to get? and what size jets are on there now, assuming that they have not been changed from stock. I have found some rebuild kits for about $14 per carb, does that sound like a good price? I guess I figure that if Im doing the exhaust right now, and eventually I want to put pod filters on and rebuild the carbs, I may as well do it all at the same time, along with rejetting. Also, would you suggest any change in sparkplug or sparkplug wires?
My bike is a 1978 CX500

thanks a bunch guys for entertaining my novice questions.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Listed for Cx/GL 500D (78-82) is 78 Primary Main 112 Secondary Main and Idle Jet 45.
The numbers are scribed (but real small, <0.5mm on the head of the jets.
Clean the tarnish off with XXXX (fine) steel wool or better, use a mabnifying glass if necessary.
Dont trust them if your cant read the numbers and dont know the carbs pedigree.

Since you're going with pods the jetting is going to be a fun mess to get it right. You will probably need somewhere around an 85 or 90 in the low spot and a 120-130 in the other. But really there is no direct answer.
