Low voltage to Temp gauge
|
|
|
|
|
|
Hello everyone, This is my first post, I have had my 82 silverwing for about 5 years now and it seems to have run hot for at least the last 3 of those years, the temp gauge goes extremely high usually at highway speeds, and goes back to normal when I stop at lights, etc... I have used a multimeter to test the voltage going to the temp sensor as many previous posts have stated, my problem is that everyone was saying they are getting too many volts, When I tested I got less than 1 volt, I tried running the engine and tested again still less than 1 volt, Can this still make my temp gauge run hot? It doesnt ever seem to overheat or run bad, replaced the sensor before I tested (45 bux) I am hoping for a final fix on this, and I know this is the place to find it.
Please advise!!!

But less than 1 volt? Really? I am very new to this but the regulator seems very simple and I am going to make one. I know this is a super noob question but where is my regulator located? I tried to look for it behind the gauges but can find it there is a big metal box in front of the forks dont know what thats for hope it isnt in there or I will have to pull the fairing.
Thanks for your help Shep, I bow to your knowledge as I had read lots of these posts with your name on them Thanks again.

in addition to electric checking........... have you serviced the cooling system? the gl needle irrespective of what climate you live in,should stay on the fat/thin divide plus or minus 1/8 of an inch. service of cooling system http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=132

T dawg Is that voltage reading on the sensor wire in circuit ? ie still connected? I suspect it has to be as if you only got 1v going through the gauge then the needle would not budge If so, it sounds quite normal to me The sensor resistance will drop to around 50 ohms or so at working temp and that will pull down the voltage.
As for the gauge readings Bitter experience has taught a lot of us to check the gauge electrics before getting the spanners out If yours is ok then its possibly low coolant level or leaking head gaskets?. I say this because its one issue I've had with mine I had leaking gaskets over pressurise the coolant which filled the expansion bottle and made it overflow eventually When my coolant was low I saw my guage behave in a similar way to yours as well First thing I;d do is check the coolant in the rad (not the expansion bottle) HTH

Thanks.Thing with the ones on the UK CXs is it's obscured by the headlight nacelle and an absolute PITA to get to unlike I assume the GLs.I left my old defunct one in and just bypassed it.
PS Thanks again Reg.Home made unit still working a treat and cost pennies

T-Dawg wrote: | I have a fairing, so how would I get to the old regulator, I flushed last year, and thermostat is working. maybe I will try the 50/50 vinegar mix, if its over heating then why would it go back to normal after stopping? If I bypass my old reg, then how will I get more than 1 volt? unless I find it and disconnect it then add the new reg? Getting more confused by the minute. It doesnt seem to overheat no bubbling, bad performance, etc.... its the gauge that is erratic. The gauge overheats very quickly no matter the weather.
Still stumped in Michigan. |

The,"Bypass" is when you have made the 7v regulator and was just my way of fitting one leaving the old one in place.
However read this thread as well,
http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/144272/ShowPost.aspx
If you have done your tests and there's no 6.95/7v at the green/blue wire from the harness to ground under the tank then you need to replace the Regulator.

I will wait til I have my replacement before changing it, I have a bike run tomorrow, just wondering what I can do in the mean time should I just disconnect it from the lead by the temp sensor for now? I will do a flush today just in case.
Thanks again in advance,
