Keith green had sent me a thing on facebook saying he cant wait to have my cooking again this year i thought it was very nice of him. so let me know whats goin on so that i can plan accordingly and make sure that i have no shows going on that day that you want me there..... If you want me there..
Take care

Phil, even tho I missed last year, I still remember 08 and I agree with Keith, Holly is a good cook! If we had a caatered meal one evening that would mean we could have a full day of touring and not have to get back on the bikes to go eat. In other words I am in favor of having her cook! Gene

Gene, You were there last year and last year was the first catered dinner we had. The year before, you just charmed holly so much, she volunteered our first dinner at the camp.

Phil, unfortunately, due to my heart's reaction to heat I was not able to make the 09 Amish! I did meet Holly & her family in 08. This year I am going to cheat & trailer the GL. My little pickup has ac. See you Friday.

Hey guys hope that all is well with everyone. I really look forward to seeing you all again this year. I need an idea of what you guys want this year. I had been talking to Phil and i think that payment ahead of time by everyone would be a better idea because last year there was alot of extra food because there were people that said they were coming and didnt show up therefore it left us with alot of food left over. I dont think anyone was complaining though i heard it was really good for breakfast. I would also like your ideas on what you would like this year. I was told that you guys will be there aug. 18th to the 23rd the only day i really have free is the 19th would that suit everyone? If not let me know and i can cancel the show i was going to do and be available for the date that you choose. So start giving me some ideas on what everyone would like to have this year.
Take care, Holly

Dinner sounds delicious! I'd gladly take it a little closer to dinnertime this year, though! :D And I would like to pay in advance, no one gets screwed that way.
My bike's about to roll over to 1000000000000000 binary miles in the next week. Sixteen bits of power! Coincidentally, 0x8000 miles is also the triple bypass interval. I've got another couple years before it overflows a uint16.

What time is "dinnertime" in your world Pete? It sounds like after bedtime. Us old folk like to digest a little before going to bed.

In my world, it's usually around 8pm. I realize that doesn't work for a lot of people, so when I am in society, I will generally accept anything after 6pm as something close to dinnertime. But wasn't last year's meal around 4?
Or, I guess we could start riding at 5am and take lunch around 10...

The 19 is a thursday this year. That is usually the day for the ride in at Country Cupboard as some people can take off one day (friday) from work and can leave thursday afternoon and make the evening meal. Sometimes things can happen on the road and they might not make the campground by the next morning.
Saturday works best for the group as a few popped in (Dave's Harley friend) for the eve meal who may not have made it except for that reason.
Paying in advance for those able to commit to attending well beforehand seems to be the way to go but it means that some may attend the rally and not participate in the catered meal due to not being able or wanting to commit to attending beforehand. Those may end up going out on their own or bringing a subway (or Forest Hill Deli) back.. which would be fine. It may also discourage those who were not able to come until last notice from attending....or just popping in...
which would be against the intention of the gathering. People should be free to pop in at any time.
If parts of the 'catered' meal becomes an obstacle...or a distraction.....then I think it needs to be re-evaluated. The main goal is to increase the time of comraderie and time together. As Gene said:
If we had a caatered meal one evening that would mean we could have a full day of touring and not have to get back on the bikes to go eat. In other words I am in favor of having her cook!
Gene
And it was really, really nice have the meal at the cabin and just among the rally attendees and also to not have to 'mount up' again after the afternoon ride and then return afterwards. That was the night that we even got in the brake rebuild afterwards.
I would agree with Pete that something after 5 or 6 (as opposed to 4)woiuld allow for a full afternoon ride. I guess we ate will into the 6 pm hour anyhow. :)
Pete, did your cx's multiply or did you have your own Boston Rally?
EDIT:
On second thought, maybe the 19th would work best afterall for those able to come thursday. Thoe are usually the ones who can committ well beforehand and who come irregardless of rain or shine.

Hey guys how are you? I have been keeping tabs on here and taking everyones suggestions in. A later meal wouldnt be a bad thing if thats what you guys would like. You all just have to decide on a day. The reason i asked about the 19th is because i have a show the 20th and 21st. But i haven't committed to that show as of yet. So decide on a day and let me know. The only reason i said about taking payment a head of time is because of last year when alot of people didnt show that said they were and i had to much food and i barely covered the cost of the food with you guys that were there. I was thinking 3 days before everyone is due to ride out i can take final count of who is coming and final collections and that way i have time to adjust the food accordingly. Would anyone have a problem with that? And i understand about the last minute people coming that weren't sure if they would be there. There will be extra food and i will have the option of them joining you all should know me by now i dont turn anyone away. Everyone is welcome to eat weather they planned on being there or not. They can just pay when they get there. I liked the idea of a Pa Dutch meal is anyone else in favor of that? Gene i really missed you last year. Im glad to hear that you are coming this year. So keep the suggestions coming so i can get this all planned out.
Have a great day guys, Holly

Gene says: I agree with Phil, Saturday would be best, with probably the most in attendance. I have never had a PA Dutch meal but it sounds good to me, most of the time I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me!!
Gene
Sat seems to be best day for aforementioned reasons.
If you've had beef or chicken pot pie; pork w/sourcraut; perhaps Ham/Green beans, potatoes then you've had a dutch meal. Stuffed Goose is stomach (thnk sausage casing, only thicker) that is cleaned out and then filled with spices, pork, onios and so forth and then baked. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogmaw
Beef and cabbage; dried beef gravy; etc etc. Whoopie Pies...!! www.horseshoe.cc/pennadutch/food/recipes.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_the_Pennsylvania_Dutch
I wonder if it's responsible or practical to ask (or accept the offer from) Holly to cook for 20-30 people AND to give up schedulng her Party which would also profit her.
I sent phil an email with a menu from Wend'ts Pork Palace http://www.wendtsporkpalace.com/catering.aspx as an example of the prices and menu's from local caterers. They advertize from 20 to 800 people served. From $8-$10 seems to be the norm. This aligns with another caterer who I had contacted last yr. I think it would be worth another $1 or $2 to have ample food and to not feel limited by the caterers estimates on what an individual 'portion' would include, but maybe they usully allow for excess. It also seemed to be a benefit to have the 'home cooked meal' atmosphere of having the meal cooked at the camp. $10 or perhaps $12 tops would seem to be in line pricing. Many of us paid $20 or some such as myself $35 last year.
Pizza deals could be as 'cheap" as $5 or $6 per person if 10 plus Pizza's would be ordered. That might be a consideration for the earlier nights when fewer people are there. Wed night Pizza party??? amidst a 'wrench party"??.. The Ponderosa or Coutry Cupboard for Thurs or Friday nights.??
Anyhow, I'd be equally happy with a similar menu/offerigs as last year... corn, potatoes, one or two meats (that was great to have two) mac salad; and desert, but at the same time, I might be one of those bringing a sub or salad.
The benefit of going to a buffet style rest is that everyone can have their preference of several options of meats, potatoes, veggies.. etc.. That is not nearly as practical with a catered meal.
Well, enough rambling and this might be the extent of my input on the matter.

Yeah, Tony, What's with the outsourcing. The PA Dutch meal Dave has recommended was quite specific and mouth-watering. We can trust Holly at the camp while we are out on a ride.

Friday or Saturday dinner is good for me. Don't listen to Tony, actually, if he were really speaking instead of writing, we wouldn't hear him. Because he has his foot stuck in his mouth. I think he was attempting to show consideration for Holly's other potential commitments, not so much express a preference for alternatives.
As for menu, I vote against goose stomaches! Anything else is fine!

LoL @ Phil, Holly is outsourcing also. Dave Wiener's cooking service (We Do MORE than Hot Dogs !!!) is insourcing. :) Edit:; p.s. yes, I know it's not weiner.. :P
Dave's from Slippery Rock's menu was fine, but as Holly mentioned, it's her decision. Is Pepper cabbage the same as cole slaw?
Brocolli and Califlower salad with bacon is a treat. Baked Beans ?? Apple Pie. Beef roast with mushroom gravy over noodles.
As RICH noted: I was mostly giving other catering menue's; options and their estimates In case switch to Sat or the price didn't suit Holly and for price/menu comparison.
I think last year we started at an agreed $12.50 was then at $15 before the rally started and then to $17.50 and most who could afford gave $20. I (and perhaps others) covered a double portion of the $17.50 for anyone who had planned to come and then backed out due to weather.
Holly, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the atmosphere of the 'home cooking'was really great and it must have taken ALOT of effort; but some, or possibly many of the guys might be seeking a tighter budget than even $15 although it can apprach that or more at the buffets.
At the buffet, they can order a lighter meal if they wish. Others can weigh in on the price as they wish.
I know that the backouts due mostly to weather added to the cost and the abundance of food and the pay in advance should eliminate that problem thus there is no real accusation or criticism intended.
The catered meal could also be Friday, with leftovers held over for Sat lunch sandwiches; snacks and/ or even dinner.
Rich says:
As for menu, I vote against goose stomaches! Anything else is fine!
HAVE YOU EVER HAD BAKED GOOSE? It's not goose stomach but pig stomach. It's called baked goose because of how the entrance and exit from the stomach can be formed to a neck and tail of the "goose".
P.S... I'm not suggesting this as a menu item. :P
I'm fine with Holly doing the cooking and with a Dutch menu just as or similar to that wihch Dave mentioned; and it's likely worth extra to have a familiar cook.
A set menu and a set price with advance payment all with the option for anyone attending to feel free to opt out of participation would be basic stipulations and considerations.
All for awhile.. August is a
ways away.

Holly, I have to side with Keith on this, I too, like spam. However, having said that it does not appear that spam would fit the Pa Dutch dinner menu. Just fry up a few slices for Keith & I and that will take care of it! BTW I personally guarantee that if you have our dinner on either Friday or Saturday night your expenses will be covered and your profit will be equal to or greater than any show you may have to miss.
Tony, we don't want to hear anymore until the night of the dinner, enjoy your summer! Gene

Maybe we could simplify the dinner menu a bit and just fry the spam for breakfast? I'm good for two slices, extra fried. Boy Scouts grew up on spam.

Cut the Spam thin and then cook it between two peices of paper towel and microwave it until you can snap you wrist and it breaks in half. It will be hard to tell the difference between it and crispy bacon!
We certainly wouldn't want slimy Spam!

oh boy see you what you started keith lol. I'll bring along a bunch of spam and you guys can have it for breakfast the next morning. It looks like we are going to go with a Pa dutch meal but im not sure what all that will include yet. I'm sure we will have 2 meats again this year since you guys really liked it that way last year. I'll put together a menu and post it on her when i have it all decided out. I'm still taking your recommendations on what you would like to see at the meal. So keep the ideas coming. Spam for breakfast the next morning. So have you decided on a date yet? If you want it on Sat. that is fine with me. Does $15.00 sound like a fair price for meal drink and desert? Oh yeah and spam for breakfast lol. Let me know I have to see if my pay pal account is active and if it is you guys can just send the money in that way or if you dont have pay pal or want to do that you can send a money order to me either way would be fine. Does anyone have any objections to that? I'm thinking the cut off date to say if you are coming or not should be around august 14th. Because i know we are going to have mashed potatoes and i dont do the boxed crap so it will be all homemade so i would have to order my potatoes ahead of time so i have enough to prepare and the same way with the corn on the cob. also with whatever veggies i will need because i want them to be fresh. And as i stated before i will make sure there is extra food in case there are last minute people showing up like last year. I'm thinking Dinner around 6pm but Pete can wait till 8 pm to eat lol. I will make it like you feel like you are at an all you can eat buffet but the atmosphere will be better :) let me know if you guys have any questions or ideas.

Gene says:
Tony, we don't want to hear anymore until the night of the dinner, enjoy your summer!
Gene
Gene, I didn't plan much more comments as this is a tiring conversation and other than the pay in advance so that guys don't feel ripped off by the no shows or otherwize, It is really not that important.
And it's unknown if you'll even hear from me even the night of the dinner. I hope to lead some rides this year and am working on some destinations to the south and east but even that is not in stone.
Just wanted to offer a comparison and option of an $8-$10 catered meal.
Payment in advance should solve most if not all these issues.
The questions you'll also have to ask and answer is if the catered meal is optional or required for attendance to the Rally, requrred for just Saturday Eve attendance or not required at all.
Another thought and opinion is that leftovers should stay at camp to be eaten the next day or even taken along by those able to do so. The yeagers Could and should be invited again, Don't you think PHil.??? as a token of apreciation... and so that they continue to know that the group isn't such a rowdy bunch.. LOL
Holly asked if $15 is ok but without seeing a menu, it's kinda moot and that price is possible to change as the rally date gets closer and the actual committments register.
Last year I think close to 40 planned or hoped to attend, but either with showers being in the forecast or other preferences caused them to change their minds.
This should go much smoother and better with a pre-pay. Not sue if a 8/14 cutoff date would give enough time though, but if you (Holly) know your menu by then, it would probably be ample time to get things togther.
Suggestion, opinion..
Stuffed chicken breast,(or simply roast/bbqued chicken or turkey breast) (I think you can buy chicken breast already stuffed perhaps) Pineapple glazed Ham, mashed potatoes with gravy of some kind, Corn on cob, REAL BUTTER ... amish don't eat margarine :) Pepper cabbage: (cole slaw) Broccoli and Cauliflower salad (with bacon) Baked beans... maybe even baked lima beans instead.
Apple pie with Ice cream..??...
There is also somthing called a 7 (or 9) layer pea salad that is really good as a pre-dinner salad, but the above is ample also.
Yeah, I'd go $12-$15 for something like that but I'd hope that amount wouldnt' prevent anyone from attending. That's why the meal should be optional.
I'f I were more committed to this and sure of attendance: I'd offer to help or to supply a helper or perhaps bring the apple pies and corn and as time gets closer, I would be able to offer those for consideration. Heck I'd even do the catering.
If you want some ideas on some more authentic 'amish' dishes or recipies, there are lots of those cookbooks around....
I personally dont' care for chow chow... so that wouldn't be on my list.
Spam.. more spam... spam for your health... spam for your wealth... spam for bfast, spam for lunch, spam for dinner... even unwanted Spam.
I'll hang in her till I don't .. lol

Okay tony im trying to decipher your book long response.. Are you saying that you would rather cater than have me come up and do it? I mean if you really dont want me there just say so because i may be reading more into it than there is but to me it sounds like you would like to cater. if im wrong please tell me but to me thats what it looks like. referencing this comment that you made." Holly, as far as I know you have certainly not offended anyone! Tony is one of the original members of HTTA, that does not mean he has decision making responsibility for our dinner at the rally. We want to hold the dinner on Saturday, around 6. As I mentioned to you earlier I am personally guaranteeing that your expenses will be covered and you will make a profit at least the same as or greater than any show you may miss. I think you probably have a good idea on the menu, you make the final decision on that. Any leftovers can stay at the camp for Sunday. Sunday is usually a short day with folks leaving for home. Having the leftovers will simplify food needs. We will make sure any containers of yours will be returned. The cost of the meal will be $15, anyone who has a problem with that I will be glad to pay for their dinner. Anyone who shows up will get dinner regardless of whether or not they have reservations.
Tony, I was kidding you in my earlier post, I think you took it the wrong way. It appears to me that we are over thinking the dinner. Holly will decide the final menu, she has plenty of input and will plan the dinner based on that and her experience. The dinner is optional but if anyone shows up without reservations they will be fed. As always at the Amish anyone can do whatever they want to do, regardless of what the majority does. As I advised Holly the leftovers will be left for Sunday, then disposed of. Gene

Nope, I think you misunderstood; just that as time gets closer to the rally, if your feeling overwelmed, and I would know for certain of my attendance, I could purchase the corn from the local sweet corn grower and get some of the apple and peach pies (or whatever) from the local mennonite groups whom I work among in order to help you out and if you were feeling overwelmed.
If I was certain of my attendance, perhaps I would actually think about offering to cook/cater or hire someone to cook and then bring it to camp, but that would limit my riding with the group (FINALLY) and as of yet, I can't be 100% certain of my attendance.
Sorry if you got the wrong idea... The unwanted "spam' comments were directed towards myself about the grumbly bear suit I've had on... but on the other hand some things need to be ironed out and agreed to beforehand. I think the previous comments about there being plenty of food and the good cooking and atmoshphere should have disuaded any thoughts of your not being a good or adequate cook.
I think Gene has set good parameters due to his wisdom of his age,
Sat at 6:00; $15 covers all; Cooks wages or profits and tips are out of that amount. Other tips of thanks are purely optional and will be uncoerced. Leftovers stay at camp. Yeagers I think invited. 2 meats; 3+ veggies, desert ..... drinks?? Pre-pay by the 14th...
Bear suit off.
Gene: why aren't you at TWO?
No, I dont' have decision making responsibilities for the meal, thus the statements are purely opinion and interjection. I think I had made the suggestion to PHil about 3 yrs ago about a catered meal to keep everone at camp, thus I felt partly responsible for how things go or have gone...
