I suggested Need for Steed to get one of these when he needed a new petcock and he said it worked fine on his gl tank.

Often the part of the vacuum operated petcock that leaks is not the vacuum diaphram rebuidable part, but the operating lever side. This has been repaired successfully by myself and others though. The bad news is the drilling out and tapping of two holeswhere the two staked pins are is a precise and finicky task, the good news is that the rubber disk inside can then be flipped over and no "kit" is needed, good news especially since there is no "kit" available for this repair. You only need two short 4-40 or metric machine screws. It's written up somewhere in the past threads, maybe a couple of times.

Thanks !! I had rather replace than repair as it is leaking around the valve lever . and as stated above its a tricky procedure. besides the fuel inlet that comes from above there are three hoses off the petcock , why three for a two carb engine??  Thanks guys!!

One for air, one for vacuum and one for fuel.

I did the repair once and I made a mess of it. I guess you could say I didn't drill straight where I needed to.

The gl petcock has all three. The one on ebay doesn't and it doesn't matter. It will work fine.

I actually ditched the vacuum petcock for a mechanical one. it was pretty easy to do and works better imo

How does the mechanical petcock work better? My vac petcocks seem to work just fine. If a vac petcock isn't working correctly (not shutting off, or leaking) then I agree that almost any "unbroken" petcock will work better, but that's comparing working to non-working, not mechanical to vac petcocks. Just sticking up for my little friends, the oft-maligned vacuum petcock. Better for me, as I can be absent-minded at times, and forget to shut off the gas when I park in the basement under the house.

I have an 81 gl and the oem tank had a vacuum operated petcock. when i put fuel in it no matter what i couldn't get fuel to come out of it. after a jackass i work with blew the oem tank up i got another one with a mechanical petcock and fuel flows freely with no problems more or less

I 'm not so sure I like the replacement better than what was designed for this bike , If I fill the tank up like I used to it will leak out a cup or two thru the  overflow hose at the centerstand .  Never did that before. I had to put a clamp at the petcock outlet, as it is smaller than the original one and leaked.
It seemed to idle too high the first few days and without doing anything to it it now wants to idle very low , like 500 rpms. Can't figure that out?
I would rather have the original one working.  Seems like the fuel flows faster but I think mileage may be lower.  And If I don't turn the petcock off as soon as I cut the ignition it will flood and be hard to start.
I had to put a screw into the vacum hose to seal it  or it would run crappy.
So far I.m not real happy. Any suggestions?

If it's leaking out the overflow hose then your fuel needles/floats aren't right or you have cracks in the overflows.

I can't figure that Blindstitch , never happened before ever and the very day I put the new petcock on it pours fuel out like a well .  The bike has always run very well and still does ,just don.t idle right anymore , all this happened on the same day I changed the petcock.  This may be a replacement petcock but I am going to see if there is something else that works better. I may even put the old one back on.

Ok I figured out the idle problem , again, I noticed it didn't run at the right idle upon first installing the new petcock , I plugged the vacum line and it was normal ,,, the first screw I put in came out , it was just a tad too small , put another larger one in and its fine . I plugged the air line up too , do you think that could be making the fuel escape??

Could be the problem, they're kind of strange in operation.

All the bikes I've had before just had manual ones and while it takes a while to burn it into your memory I now have no problem turning the gas off as I'm putting the keys into my pocket.

I bought one of those eBay ones - wasn't that one though. Someone lists one at times and references the CX series in their "works with" list.

In the meantime - and this may find funny - you might be able to get it working again by restoring the rubber.

Take it off and, using a spray extension or plastic syringe, fill each old with some rubber rejuvinator. This used to be available in the electronic service chemical category, now I think it may be more findable as printer roller cleaner/rejuvinator in a bruh bottle. PBS Blaster works fairly well too.

put some in, operate everything a few times (helps to have a vacuum pump or use a big syringe and hose for that part) then let it set. Repeat.

Ok I plugged the air line and it did not flood the cylinders when I left it on( petcock)  on purpose to check and see. No flooding this time , I will report back again in a day or two and see if that really helps . Perhaps the open airline was causing it to release fuel out the overflow when very full .  I very habitually close the petcock upon cutting the ignition. Learned that long ago.

I wonder if soaking my old petcock in some rubber rejuvenator might stop it from leaking??

It's always worth a try, good rubber rejuvinator helps to both soften and slightly expand older hardened rubber by restoring some of the natural oils that were present when first manufactured.

Don't use any sort of normal motor oil, it eats up rubber. Electrical contact cleaner might also work in a pinch. If you can find anything with 1,1,1 Trichloroethane in it (forgoet about that if you live in CA) it's very good about softening up hard rubber, and silicone spray works well as an oil restorer too. In fact - silicone spray alone is often suspended in a trichlor or similar solvent and is available at Home Depot, Lowes etc.
