Anyone know what to do about this? I've been looking for gl650
and found one, but the buyer can only provide a bill of sale. Is
there any service out there that can obtain a title for the bike?
I live in Missouri.

Find a member who lives in New Hampshire who can get the bike titled and then sell it back to you with a title. It could cost a couple hundred bucks but it could work.

Google "International title service" I used them to get a title for a 69 datsun roadster. My brother told me about them. He's used them to get title for motorcycles before.

He'd have to wait at least a year or so for a New Hampshire title. They won't title anything older than 15 years and younger than 26 years. I believe the GL650's were 1983's, which makes them 25 years old, still have a year to go before NH will title it. Easy to get though, NH does it through the town hall and was $50 last I heard.

If you have a tag, call law enforcment and see if it is stolen. If not, go to the vehicle registration office and ask for an application for a bonded title. Go to an independent insurance broker and get a bond. In Arkansas it costs $75. This is how I got a title for my 56' Triumph PreUnit chopper.

A lot of times if you have the last valid registration and a bill of sale from THAT person you can get past it too.

Lost or Missing Missouri Title --
Missing Titles / Applying for a Duplicate Title
If you applied for your title two weeks ago or more and wish to check the status of your application, please use our online inquiry form.
If you are planning either to buy or sell a vehicle and the vehicle’s title is missing, the owner of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title. The sale is not valid without a properly assigned title. If the title has been mutilated or otherwise ruined, the owner of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title in order for the sale to proceed.
If your title has been lost, mutilated, or destroyed, you may apply for a duplicate title.
To apply for a duplicate title, you must submit:
- An Application for Missouri Title and License (DOR-108), completed in full and signed, including the following:
- Indicate a Missouri address;
- Mark the block labeled "DUPLICATE" at the top of the form to indicate you are applying for a duplicate title;
- Complete
the notary information near the bottom of the form, where it is marked
"Notary-Dup. Title Only," and indicate the reason you need the
duplicate;
- Have the form
notarized. Your signature must be witnessed by a notary public, and the
notary must complete the notarization box in the block marked
"Duplicate Title Only";
- If you
are applying for a duplicate title because your original title was
mutilated, you must return the mutilated title with your application
for a duplicate;
- If the title
is to be mailed to an address other than that indicated in the owner's
portion of the application, and no lien (loan) is indicated, please
place an "X" in the "Mail To" block and write or type that address in
the space provided. A title may be mailed to an address other than that
indicated in the owner's portion of the application if there is only
one lien (loan) indicated.
- If applicable, a notarized Lien Release (DOR-4809) is required.
- Submit an $8.50 duplicate title fee and a $2.50 processing fee.
You may submit your application and fees to your local contract office, or to the Motor Vehicle Bureau, 301 West High Street, Room 370, P.O. Box 100, Jefferson City, MO, 65105-0100.
Remember:
- Make checks and money orders payable to the Missouri Department of Revenue.
- Personal checks MUST show your name, address, date of birth, and driver license number.
- Do not send cash through the mail!

Anon: You're assuming the bike had a Missouri title at some point in it's existence, I don't think that's the case.
Or is it?

"move all the good stuff to it's frame" That's exactly what I meant, switching the vin would be illegal

Thanks all, I wouldn't have even considered this bike, except I've been
wanting a 650I and it has been very hard to find. In addition to the
title issues, the bike is a project, which I'm OK with. After listening
to all this, I think the best course of action for me, is for the seller
to take care of the title issues and not have to worry about it
myself. If he doesn't I think I
will walk away. I don't know of any Silverwing frames, that I could
utilize. I don't want to get stuck with a sitting bike in the garage.

i think you've made the right call. the only way i would buy that bike would be as a parts bike, i.e.-putting a 650 motor in a titled 500 frame.

the only way to do it in NH would be to have the bike here. The police or an inspection station would fill out a VIN verification form after running the VIN and it coming back clear then you can take that to town hall and register it. I have done this so many times that I fill out the form and the cop that comes to my house just signs the form

Check out International Title service in Nevada. It cost me 150.00 dollars to title my 81 cx500. Their address is 3342 S. Sandhill Rd.. Suite 9-445 Las Vegas Nevada 89121. Tel. # is 1-800-543-8626. Or 1-702-456-4027 Ask for Joe Holmes. He is very professional and will get the job done legally and fast. I buy and fix to sell parts bikes all the time and look for bikes with no title that can be bought cheap. I have never had a problem titleing bikes as long as you do exactly as he tells you to do. Good luck Mark

Every state has their own requirements. There is no single correct answer for all situations.
Here in GA, only a bill of sale and liability insurance are needed to register/license a vehicle this old. A title is strictly optional. The last time I purchased a GL with a title, the tag agent asked if I wanted to apply for a title in my name - there was a small additional application fee to do so, and I was given the option since it was not necessary.
