there is an inspection port on the back right hand side of the engine, (you use it when you adjust the valves to find TDC for right and left) you look like you have your breather draining back in there with some kind of adapter. what is the adapter? (it is right below the orange filter.

On some of the later models (mostly the GLs in the US), there is another crankcase breather on that port. It also connects to the airbox in the stock setup.

Now theres some proof that a restoration can be done. Any reason why it didn't have forks on it. Was it in an accident or just stripped?

You are right, it was on the later moddels that they moved it to the inpection hole. I recon that if you close of the ones you have now and just get the inspection cap of the later models you'll have the same. I'm not too sure it's all the same on the inside though.

They are made from the stock shock boddies.

They
are the stock bars. I bought 16" apes but decided that I liked the
stock bars more. The paint job is all rattle can. Flat black is "rust

Here are the build pics as requested.......

I'm with you guys!..... I'm thinking my 'parts' CX looks more like it might be receiving the 'chop/bobber' look after seeing Blacky's build. (by the way mate, couldn't get out today to meet up but shall definately try another time, would like very much to see this beast in the 'metal')
So have you kept the 'Regulator/Recitifier' still mounted in the corner of the frame left side of the bike? That is still an ongoing issue with me, I'm trying to work out if I can locate it somewhere else without too much trouble, I'd like to put some sort of oval plate maybe out of aluminium over both sides to cover my battery area (I've gone off the idea of an 'open' look for my bike) instead of the original side covers. But the problem is with the left hand side the regulator sticks out from the frame so you can't make simple flat ones, they would need to bulge out around it. Guess I'll keep thinking of ideas to re-work that regulator.
Nice chop on your bike, say, what tank is that from? Is that a 'Custom 500' tank?

Thanks for all the kind coments guys, now start choppin' ya cx's :)
Regulator is in the original position - does not bother me, I just spray all the electrics with water repelling silicon spray.
The tank was an ebay find (honda 500 custom tank). Kreem treated it for the rust and had to redo the mounts, relocate the coils etc...... alot of work went into fitting that tank.
I would love to see your bike in the "metal" also.
BTW, I had a great ride through the Dandenongs today, bike didn't miss a beat!
Cheers Blacky.

The custom looks fairly decent with the deluxe tank on it. Did you scoot the seat back a bit or something. Looks like a lot of room under there.
Also if you think your seat is a pain in the a$$ check out the dyna wide glide seats for 03-06. I figured out that if you drill a hole through it's mounting latch and carve away a bit of the plastic above it and staple the cover back down you can use the gas tank back bolt as the mounting and then attach it to the fender in the method of your choice. For a look at how it sits check out Natrick's Hondian or my bike. Best part the second one I go only cost $9 plus shipping. Most harley guys are just throwing these away or selling them dirt cheap.

Blacky why did you take the mini faring off. It looked good.
Woodbutcher That fairing is off a 78 cx500 standard. It's called something weird that starts with an N.
Blacky Now I know that in a pinch I can put a custom tank on a Standard if I cant find a good one.

Not weird to "aircraft" folk, it's a nacelle. In aircraft it's usually the carcass around an engine but can mean any aerodynamic enclosure.

No problem.
Blacky - If you still have that little plexi bug shield, big bucks can be had for it. They're frequently in demand, quite rare, and frighteningly expensive in reproduction.

It was standard equipment (or at least a very common option) on the later Standards in the European market. (The US market switched to the Custom and Deluxe exclusively in '79. Euroland and the Aussies got the Standard through '82, I think.) They're long out of production.
Since I've mounted the Spitfire, I know that the bug shield wouldn't do much for me (I'm almost too tall for the Spitfire.) But I'm sure there are others still looking for them.

Thanks for getting the pics up. And thanks to all for the wealth of information on this site!
The tank's off a '78 but I raised the back a bit so it would sit a little flatter and not need to be cut down. The seat has some dense 3/4" rubber blocks glued to the frame where the rubber bumpers hit to give me some extra legroom. Standard mounting in the back but the larger tank pushes the nose of the saddle up which actually keeps me from sliding forward. That with the lower Euro style bars and dropped front end makes it really comfortable.

ok well i am very new here i have spent about 2 hours on here reading every thing. i have had my 80' cx500 custom since this summer. I got it for about $400. when i got it i had so many plans on what to do with it, i wanted to build a bobber and the got really discouraged when i saw all the things that stood in my way. things like drive shaft drive. the lack of a complete frame. the shifter. just kinda made me upset and i tried to get ride of the bike. then i found a video on youtube. it was very bad quality and it was only a few seconds long. so i emailed him and asked if he could send me some pictures. and he did and this bike inspired me so much. and i know am building my almost identical to it. but i am running a real seat and a real fender. and since this post i am for sure running forward controls on it. i may even try to make and run a for clutch and make a jockey shift for it. well heres the pictures of my bike when i first got it. it had highway bars and luggage rack on it. but i took it off befor i took the pictures. <a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=cx500.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/cx500.jpg" border="0"></a>
And these are the pictures of the bike that inspired me and one other bike that’s similar to what I want.
<a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=cx500bobber.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/cx500bobber.jpg" border="0"></a>
<a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=cx500bobber5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/cx500bobber5.jpg" border="0"></a>
<a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=cx500bobber3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/cx500bobber3.jpg" border="0"></a>
<a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=bobberlook2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/bobberlook2.jpg" border="0"></a>
And here is where I am currently at with my bike.
<a href="http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/?action=view¤t=59c0ced0011a4c9a81f7a46ec9a91d2e.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q153/buddyayres/59c0ced0011a4c9a81f7a46ec9a91d2e.jpg" border="0"></a>
I have so far removed a lot of stuff. Rear fender, air box, seat, the exhaust is off now, I need to find I need to get one that is not a 2-1 system like mine. I also I have removed all the front brakes, and all electrical in the front, no more speedometer or tach, I am also considering running a smaller gas tank. Every thing is getting paint black even part of my front forks. And I will be running 16 inch ape hanger unles I can figure out how some of the people made risers on here. The only problem with making this into a bobber is I have so many extra parts that I took off, the bike also came with millions of extra parts that I cant use.

I like what your thinking. You should get some pods to go on the carbs so you don't suck up some wierd stuff.

That thing must sound nice, buddyayres, looks like you put a couple of trumpet ends on the open straight exhaust.

i dont liek the exhaust on it right now, it has the 2-1 exhust on it. and i just took the baffle part of just to hear what it sounds like. i am going to run my exhaust like it is on the rear one but then wrap them in black header raps and put chrome turdowns on it the exit right behind my heal.

BearCX, OMG, I must see more of your build! NICE!! This is similar to what I have planned for my chop.
I see that you have sectioned and widened the frame and widened and lengthened the swingarm - your speaking my language here. How about the backbone? I'm assuming there's a stretch in there somewhere but can't tell from your pics, and the forks - oh my!
