Hard starting after riding 50 miles.
Reply Quote
Heres one from my brother who's down for a week.

The bike runs pretty decent but I have to dial the idle back a bit.  When he rides the bike for over 50 miles and shuts it off the bike doesn't want to start back up. It just cranks. Then after a while backfires and comes back to life. He says if he lets it sit for 20 minutes and comes back to it that it fires right over.

I experienced this with him yesterday
but
If I push start the bike it fires right up?

Any ideas. I only have 5 days to work on this before he has to drive 300 miles back home.

year, make and model?

My CX does this because she gets too warm and starts stressing the stator and battery and the motor starts to tighten up. Between the extra oomph needed to start the bike and the weakened battery, she just cranks slow and stops. If I wait a minute and push start her or let her sit for half an hour and push the button she fires right up.

1979cx500 custom. It gets a decent crank but I have always suspected the starter to be working slower than on my bike. I get about 2 engine rotations and I'm up and running but this bike seems to like to spin a lot. I know we have jumped it a lot but not after the 50 mile mark. When we jump it there seems to be enough cranking that should start it but as soon as we hook up the cables it fires over.

The back fire could mean that the carb's could be leaking into the cylinders, over wetting the cylinder plugs.

Maybe but I don't think so. I'm going to pull the plugs tomorrow and make sure they are the right color. Been running a bit better lately. Maybe it just wanted to be used. Still gets 50ish miles per gallon. Same as my bike.

Still sounds like a heat issue but it may be affecting other areas and causing a loss of compression...possibly getting warm and screwing with the tolerances in the head and valve train.  A dinky change in the tolerances in the jugs or the head/s can make the difference between the bike firing up and running from a 150rpm starter speed and needing a 350rpm starter speed.

Have you done a compression test?  You should do one cold and hot, and remember to do them at WOT.

Haven't done a compression test yet. I'm short the gauges and only have one or two more days to figure things out before he leaves.

Check the valves.  That's fast and easy to do.  You may also be able to borrow a compression tester from AutoZone/Advance/Etc...a good gauge from Advance with the 12mm adapter (you have to have the little adapter) is $40.  If you can borrow/buy a tester from the typical try hitting up an auto/motorcycle shop and ask politely and be prepared to leave something as collateral that's worth well more than a good gauge.

Also make sure his fan is in one piece and that his cooling system is intact.

Another big thing to look at...though I hate to suggest it because people here are soooo eager to do it...but check the stator outputs.  Before swapping to the TI ignition I was having a similar issue but it wasn't always ride-related.  Sometimes I could ride all day and not have a problem, other times I trip around the block would leav eme unable to restart.

I'll look into the gauge.

I know the fan is intact and working good because I changed out the front cover gasket 2 weeks ago and that was one of the first things I checked. I filled the coolant and ran it cap off for a while and refilled when needed.
