Die! Die! Die!

Okay, 1980 CX500C. The bike will start with the key turned "on" regardless of the kill
switch position; once running, turning the key "off" kills the lights,
but the bike will keep running. The kill switch does nothing. Wiring diagram says that kill switch and ignition switch shutoff function are both linked to a Black/White wire. B/W wire goes to main controller box under the seat. When kill switch or ignition switch are turned "OFF", B/W is linked to Ground.
From the main controller box (CDI?), B/W wire goes to a bullet connector, where it goes into a main wiring trunk and heads forward to presumably link to the two switches. If i disconnect the bullet connector and hit it with a multimeter, the section that connects to the main wiring trunk is already grounded, regardless of the switch position- apparently there's a wiring fault somewhere. I took that bullet connector immediately off the CDI and disconnected it, then tried grounding it to the frame- neither position killed the bike. CDI appears to be fully potted with rubber, so i can't tinker with its innards at all
Any thoughts? i don't much care if i get the factory kill switch working, i'll hack in a toggle and hide it somewhere... but pulling spark plug leads to shut off the bike lacks a certain elegance.
Cheers,
...dave

I sure hope someone out there has an answer to this problem. My 79 Custom does the exact same thing. It is quite frustrating to not be able to turn off the bike. Kills my gas milage.

http://home.earthlink.net/~irlydia/ There is no easy solution to this problem. Since the ignition system has its own power source (not related to the battery) I suggest you stall the bike to shut it off. Lock the steering so nobody can push start it. Dick in Raleigh <><

The kill switch wire is unplugged. Plug it back in. Don't remember exactly where it is on the CDI bikes, but it's a single wire with a banana connector that goes into the CDI box under the seat. The kill switch (or turning the ignition off) grounds that wire, which tells the CDI box to stop firing the plugs. If that wire is unplugged, the CDI box will never be grounded, and will continue to fire the plugs with the ignition off.
This also makes the Deluxe and Standard CX500's really easy to steal if your steering isn't locked. Only takes a few seconds to pop the seat latches, unplug that connector, and either bump-start the bike or use a screwdriver to short the solenoid. The Custom is the same way, but a thief would have to unbolt the seat which takes much more time - and tools.
Charles.

No, that's what i'm saying... i can unplug that connector under the seat and ground it directly, and it still doesn't act as a killswitch.
i'm thinking that if i cut the yellow wire to one of the coils, and splice in a toggle switch, that should kill the bike pretty efficiently... then it's just a matter of remembering to turn it on before i spend ten minutes fussing over the bike to get it to stay running below 2k. Also need to be real careful about shrink-wrapping all my connectors so i don't short it out...
That CDI wiring diagram is a nice piece of work, though- thanks for the link!
Got the bike up to 40 on the dirt road in front of my house yesterday... whee! Now i just need my insurance card so i can get it out on the pavement...

Yes, I grounded the side going into the CDI, and yes, pavement = roadway. Although there are no sidewalks in my part of town, so there is the occasional pedestrian.
Hm. I wonder if a bad CDI could also be responsible for the 1000-2000 RPM stumble I'm hitting on accel... already cleaned and gapped the plugs, checked the valves, and cleaned the carbs (and checked the accelerator pump). Stupid electronic doodads. Nothing but trouble!

If you bump start it with the key off will it still start?
