More Carb stuff....fuel filter anyone??
|
|
|
|

I have been going through my new (to me) 81 CX500c and attempted to balance the carbs without the special 8mm/slot tool. I found it very difficult to tighten the locknut without changing the screw setting. I have since ordered the tool and when it comes I will have another go at balancing the carbs. If that doesn't smooth things out I am going to clean the carbs using LRCXed's method from the cx500 gl500 650 global forum http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=32
After seeing all the tiny orofices in these carbs it seems to me they would be very prone to fuel crud blocking the holes and causing problems. Has anyone tried using a fuel filter between the tank and the carbs?

That's one of the first suggestions we give people when they come in here. If your reading this and you don't have a fuel filter get one. You don't need the random crap that may be in your tank in the carbs.

I used a purolator filter from advanced auto. I've got the same filters in my golf cart. The filter can be used for 1/4 inch line or 5/16. I just cut the ends off for 5/16. I had to install it as close to the petcock as I could to clear the side cover on my GL. You don't have as large of a side cover on your CX though. Also I used screw down hose clamps for a tight seal.

I just put fuel filters on our bikes and the 650 made 30 miles, the 500 made 50. Both bikes died of fuel starvation. I can see nothing in the filter, but it will not let gas even into it. I took them off and put new fuel line on and away they went. Bit of a pi-- off, ruined our little holiday. There really is no room for a good sized filter on the GL's, I think I will rely on the in tank screen.

What kind of filter did you use? I have a $2 clear plastic filter with a porous metal "stone" inside and it works great. The other thing I like about the inline filter is that it's easier to disconnect the fuel line off of the filter than the petcock when I remove the fuel tank.
A bit off topic, but did I ever mention that the PO of my bike sealed the inside of the fuel tank (poorly, I might add) but didn't remove the in-tank screen first. Sometimes I wonder how that guy functions.

The tank screen isn't that good at protecting the carbs as little things do still get through.
What filters did you use?

The filters are "ATLAS" MTD. It says it fits small engines up to 80 HP, it fits 5/16" and 1/4" fuel lines.

This is how my day went. First pic I am taking the seat off to remove the tank. I was blaming the screen inside the tank because gas would not flow to the filter.

Try to find one of these filters. Several of us on here use them. Also a good idea to keep a segment of fuel hose for emergencies.
I use the straight version and it works fine for me. I don't know how much time you spent on the side of the road but I normally go through a decent amount of work before I call a car. Since it happened on both bike I would throw them out and never buy that brand again.

Thanks I will look for the K&N filter, and yes I "NOW" have a segment of fuel line, and a segment of vacume line also. I spent about 2 hours fighting with my bike before I gave up. It was not until my wifes bike died after riding double for several miles, that I twigged on to the filter as the problem. I was sure it was a petcock problem, and had it apart a few times. My daughter is the the one that rescued us, it is fitting because she is now a police officer, but on a day off.

I can vouch for the K&N filter as I ran it on my 650 custom. The 650 set-up doesn't really allow for the normal straight in line fuel filter as the run of fuel line isn't super long. This 90 degree K&N fit in just fine though. After searching high and low locally for one, I ended up ordering two from Amazon. In my cx500's I used the straight type in line filter which was readily available at the local motorcycle shop part's dept.

I have the same one, but did you know yours is on backward? I almost did the same thing because it came with two arrows that pointed in opposite directions. One arrow is molded into the plastic indicating which way the fuel flows, and the other was on a sticker and marked "To Fuel Tank".

No Prob! You might want to rinse it out before flipping it just in case it trapped something big.
I just laughed at myself after almost putting it on backward too. LOL!
