Yesterday I went out for a ride, got all my stuff on, hit the starter and it just cranked but no start. I could smell gas so I turned the key off and located the smell. My petcock hose had a hole in it just out of the filter. Since I try to be ready for everything I had an extra 10 inch length of hose in a bag on my bike just in case something happens. Cut the hose to fit and went for a ride.
If you don't know what your fuel hose looks like you may want to replace it or get a spare 8 to 10 inches and zip tie it to the bike under the seat above the air filter or under one of the side covers.
Pays to be prepared than to be stranded on the side of the road.

also, make sure you are getting fuel rated hose... too many times i've replaced vacuum line that someone has used for a fuel system without realizing that it will be quickly eaten by fuel!

I know the fuel hose is supposed to be 7.5mm which is larger that 1/4" but smaller than 5/16". What size do you have, was it metric from a cycle shop or standard from the auto parts store?

I just checked. Left the bag in the kitchen. It's standard 1/4 from an autoparts store. 2 feet cost a little more than $2.
Just cut a chunk off the broken hose and brought it with me so I got the right one.

Um,
Very tempting, but I'm just going to leave this thread alone.

WiCX I hope that you are referring to “leaving the bag in the kitchen”. LOL. Your comment forced me to reread this thread 3 times.
One thing that I have not read on this site is that clear vinyl seems to become very hard and stiff if used as a gas line.

Pretty sure he was commenting on "Check your Hose"
Clear vinyl becomes very hard and stiff if used as gas line. There it goes I said it. Tried that route once and it sucked. The stuff is only good for lawnmowers.

Was it the hard and stiff 8-10 inches that sucked? or was the reference to the "hosebag" BS left in the kitchen? LOL... All in humor BS, My apologies to your better half.

Better half says it's still to big but hey with a 1/4 inch inside diameter it has the capacity for a lot of fluid.
Forgot to add. Keep a spare fuel filter with the hose. I have two extras on my bike seeing as it's getting around time to change it again.

It's not even good for lawnmowers. It apparently suffers from shrinkage when it gets hard (oddly enough) and worked itself off the fuel filter on my riding mower in less than 2 months. Weak

Gosh, I bet it is really expensive if you pay a professional to check your hose and blow it out just in case it was clogged. LOL

Good advice. Mine recently developed a stress crack resulting in a minor leak.

Well, I pulled my hose today to inspect it and it seems to be permanently curved.
Is this a problem?
Also, it seemed awfully hard to get it off. Should I use some lube on the nipples?

So the hose was permanently curved, didn't Bill Clinton have a similar problem?

GL After expanding several times over the years in hot and cold weather it changes the shape. Just like one of the guys suggested sticking hoses in boiling water then fitting them as soon as possible for it to keep it's shape.
Clintons hose is permanently straightened with a slight curve to the left after monica got through with him. Lucky she didn't break it off.

To all of you ... thanks for the laughs and you didn't even have to use profanity to do it ... even though a lot if people like to use profanity when they do it.

I think a lot more folk will use profanity if they follow the recommendation of putting their hose in boiling water if it's hard.
Granted it'll soften up pretty quick but I'm a little concerned as to the likelyhood of the process affecting it's future functionality.
As for leaving the bag in the kitchen, that's where she belongs anyway isn't it?
And on the subject of Cigars I, like Bill, enjoy a nice stogie now and again. It keeps the mind calm in times of stress & is a nice way to celebrate something going well. Difference from Mr. Clinton being is, I keep mine in a humidor that doesn't go talk to the press after I take it out...
