Well I took my tank into a friend's body shop to pull a few dents out and made a mistake. I cleaned the tank about a month ago and it's been sitting ever since. I was using the stud gun when a load bang and a flash of light came from the tank and I will let the picture tell the rest. The rear bolt is in holding it on the bike and the cap wasn't on at the time of the explosion. Needless to say I am looking for a new tank, preferably from a deluxe. If anyone has a deluxe tank for sale drop me a message and we can talk. How well would a CB750 tank fit?

I have a tank , It has a nice dent in it. You might be able to get it out, and maybe not I don't know. I don't think this is what you want though.

I's not pretty. There is just that one dent in it. Then the inside.
Let me know what you think?

What would it take to restore the inside? I've never used chemicals to clean rust except for a little surface rust with acid when I used to do bodywork. The dent isn't an issue. Does it come with the fuel cap and lock? How much is the real question. I don't have much money and really didn't plan on blowing up my tank.

Wow. I think we need a better set of photos to judge how bad it was. In a way it's funny but sucks also. Good thing you cleaned up the tank first.

The explosion took the bottom of the tank and pushed it out. It is sitting right on the backbone of the bike. Looking at it from above it is shaped like a heart. Almost looks like a butterfly pork chop or like the tank was trying to turn itself inside out. I was looking for a scrap body panel to experiment with different paint ideas. Didn't really want it to be my tank though. It is amazing how symmetrical the bends are though. Blindstitch, your always on the forum. Can you message me with any advertisements of Deluxe tanks for sale. A143road has one but don't know if I am patient enough to clean the inside of his tank.

I think the best stuff to use is POR-15. I haven't used it but what I have read that POR-15 is the best. I've read that cleaning the inside can be done a number of ways. I've read people using BBs, but that would be hard to get all thoes BBs out. then some use a length of small jack chain. Hold onto one end and shake the tank. That is to loosen up the big pieces of rust. Look at POR-15 I think it is the best.
I think if you planed to blow it up you would have done a better job.lol. I'm glad you were not working on it at the time, that could have been bad.
I think it will cost 18 to 20 bucks just to ship it. PM me with a price well go from there. If you can use the tank?

Actually I was working on it without safety glasses when it blew. I had the stud gun in my hand and was sticking a stud on the corner to pull out a dent when it rocked the shop. It really didn't hit me on how bad it could have been until about an hour later. It was also stomach high on a workbench. Dodged me a bullet. I am still trying to figure out what happened because I have worked on several tanks with the same method. Maybe the fumes built back up inside after the water and cleaner dried. Yes, it was a non-flammable cleaner. So the POR-15, you just clean it with the cleaners in the kit then pour in the sealer and swash around to coat everything?

Now you have a Fatboy tank! Glad you weren't hurt.
You could also have it cleaned and sealed by a radiator shop. If they dip it in the acid tank, most of the paint will be stripped for you, too.

Sell it on ebay as a customized "extended mileage tank".

The guy with the red deluxe tank on e-gay is being a dick and said that there is no way to take pictures of the inside and other side of that tank. I was going to stick with my custom tank until I found a good deal on a deluxe tank but kind of go those plans pushed a little ahead. As for bending the tank back. Not happening, there would be so many bends and weak spots I would be afraid to use them.

Number one reason I don't go near E-bay, it's full of turds like that & it's too easy to be caught out even if you think you have a genuine good deal...
Randall in mpls Wrote-: Now you have a Fatboy tank! Glad you weren't hurt.
I was going to reply "Why not sell that to the Hardley Dangerous mob", it's uncanny how much it really does look like a proper Harley tank...
Glad nobody got hurt though, could have been really nasty had the cap been on.
I'm wondering if maybe there was some corrosion inside the tank that had retained some volatile element of the juice even after cleaning & slowly released it over the time it sat...

Actually a local bike salvage yard has one dentless for $179. $150 with some trading of parts I have but I don't want to spend that much.

If you are going to weld a gas tank, plumb the exhaust of a car/bike/generator in there first to evacuate the oxygen (old welders trick). Sorry about your loss, but that is still pretty funny. I just parted out a GS850 that caught on fire, the tank was completely ballooned out.

I've seen this trick done several times by my uncle. He would take a small engine machine and pipe the exhaust into the tank. If he had a big tank he would let it pump in for 30 minutes before starting his repair and left it on during. Once fixed let the weld cool, hit it with a bit of paint and hook things back up.

I see what you mean about the tanks and price. Just had a look and like the prices I'm seeing. CxSarnia has both bikes. Maybe he's tried a test fit. Or can provide us with some of the basic dimensions of the tank. If a custom tank is 21 inches end to end and a deluxe tank is two inches longer I bet you can adapt a fit as long as it isn't longer than 23 inches.

I never tried it, but I would bet the CB750K tank would match up with the 'rubber posts' on the deluxe CX's, but the Custom's front is different with bolts that go through. The back end of course is a bit longer - a bit of a Fab job with some sort of seat alteration would be required too - I'd think.

If you decide to go with the rusty tank shown above, don't try to epoxy line it yourself.. I have heard of a lot of cases where something went wrong and the stuff either didn't harden properly or flaked off a couple of years lalter.
Instead, pull any dents &c and then, before filling & prepping it, take the tank to a local rad repair shop to have them line it. They have done it before and know how to work with the chemicals. They will deal with the smell and the mess. They are equipped to solder up any holes that are too big for the epoxy to seal properly. And they wil probably charge you just about what the POR15 kit would cost.
The GL500 tank on my 650 was done in '03 and is still holding up perfectly.

DONT use POR-15. POR-15 is AWESOME for stuff like car frames where they are rough and rusty.
thing with POR, it deteriorates in sunlight, and DOES NOT STICK to anything but rough, rusty metal (loose stuff scraped off, no sanding though)
if you paint it to anything remotely smooth, it will peel off like plastic wrap a short time later. its the most durable coating possible for the right applications though.

I've used POR-15 on two motorcycle gas tanks (interior) and it works well and it's not that difficult to do, just follow directions. Do not try to short cut the process.

how is the longevity? i have personal experience with POR peeling off like plastic wrap many times. if the surface isnt bitey enough, forget about it.
