How do I get the frickin' coolant reservoir off
Reply Quote
 How do I remove the coolant reservoir from the 1979 CX500 – mine rotted through and now I need to replace it (I have no ride!). Searched forever last night and today but cannot figure out what needs to come off in order to get that sucker in and out. I used a broomstick, hammer, and needle-nose pliers in my attempts.  Whats next acetylene torch?

I'd thought of that, but is it really necessary to just replace the tank?

I agree with WisconsinCX.

Here is proof that it can be done.

However, It would be easier to move the engine, at least some.

Your looking at some fun with the coolant reservoir. Do you happen to need a new mechanical seal. That would be a good thing to get done at the same time.

I always wonder why people worry so much about these reservoirs. I know there isn't much to them and the radiator dosen't hold much fluid but I hardly ever have to add fluid to my radiator and when I do it's usually because it's time for basic maintenance. How hard is it to check the coolant once a month?

I guess my theory strings from the old Ford I had where it didn't have a reservoir. It just dumped the hot coolant on the ground. Never had any problems with that truck besides needing to put a new floor in it.

You can always hammer out what is left of the one you have left and putting a thick plastic bottle in it's place with plastic tie straps until you do pull the engine sometime in the future.

BS - You may get away with a non-vented cap but a boil over, at speed, could get you to leap off you bike. lol

I found this online, it explains the difference between vented and non vented better than I can, because I've never noticed the difference:
Most caps these days are "vented" to a recirculating tank. This means that they have a one-way valve on the bottom of the plunger that closes when there is pressure in the radiator and opens when there is a vacuum in there. In the case of a 16# cap, when the pressure in the rad goes over 16#, it pushes the plunger up and releases the pressure into the little tube sticking out the side of the cap holder. Any steam/water under pressure blows out this little tube. If you have a hose between the little tube and the recirculating tank the steam and water go into the tank (it usually enters from the bottom and is vented at the top). When everything cools down, the radiator now has a vacuum in there and the little one-way valve on a "vented" cap opens and permits the liquid held in the recirculating tank to return into the radiator, because the vacuum from the cooled-down rad now sucks the water from the bottom of the recirculating tank back into the radiator. Old sytle rad caps don't have that little one-way valve in there.

Older cars used to run much cooler and normally didn't require a recovery tank, because they seldom "boiled over", unless there was some kind of problem - therefore a non-vented rad cap was the norm, with a vent hose exiting to the street, just in case. Modern day engines are designed to run at higher temps and in many instances dump water into a recovery tank from the expansion of the extra heat, to be "recovered" later, when the engine cools down.

Older cars that didn't have a recovery tank typically had oversized radiators, and you would only fill the radiator to about 2" below the cap. They ran just as hot, and the coolant expanded into the air space in the top of the radiator.

It's true that they were filled below the neck, and the coolant expanded into the air space, but they did in fact run cooler. Cars today are designed to run hotter to reduce pollution.

Expelling coolant to a tank, and recovering it to the radiator are normal, routine functions.  Look at your overflow tank when engine is cold vs hot (meaning "operating temperature")  There is a higher level at running temps.  If you did not have a tank, you would soon be low on coolant.  If you restricted the outflow, you would end up with excessive radiator pressure.   It's just the way vehicle engines are designed these days.

On one of my CX the coolant overflow bottle has not been used by the engine in over two years.I know this as the coolant in the engine is standard blue and the coolant in the over-flow bottle is advanced,"Orange",The two have never mixed.There are no blockages in my system.I think in good condition the cooling system on the CX/GLs is so good it rarely if ever requires the use of the overflow system.

Hey Shep,
When I started my GL500 the first time, I didn't get any 'flow' in the cooling system.  I popped off the rad cap, and topped it off at the radiator.  After that, once the engine was warm, there was an exchange of the fluids in the reservoir.  I'm sure it did 'exchange' as the fluid in the reservoir began to warm up as well.

I wish i would have read this on friday!

I spent 2 hours Saturday struggling with it. I took it out becuase I needed to clean out the pulsar and replace the gasket. If you take the pulsar cover and carbs off, the reservoir tank slides right out, no problem.

Good point, that on a CX, it may side right out, as you say. - I didn't think they had a pulsar.

On a GL I remember having the; air-box, carbs, starter, battery box, mono shock, and the pulse gen cover off and still had a time getting it out. I still believe that it was pig-headdeness that kept me form removing the engine. Thus my recommnedation.

Maybe I am wrong to make recomendations to CX owners on this.

Been there, done that, except that I HALF dropped the engine. That was easier than undoing the timing-case!
At the risk of repeating others:
TAI model CX 500s, 1982 (actually late '81) have the plate replaced by a timing case.
Just disconnect the shaft & boot;
Undo all BUT the front hanger bolt;
Get a trolley jack and take the weight;
Pull the bolts and swing the rear of the engine down ~1 1/4".
Bottle drops straight out. The only difficult or painful bit is carrying the jack and reconnecting the shaft.

I also replaced the pulser screws with allen screws (or cap-screws) so I can play with the timing advance without so much grief. Doing the same with the timing-cover screws would not go amiss either.

The more I look at this and consider situation, the more I think, "Any idiot could make a bottle that goes in there and comes out easily!"

...It's then I realise, Honda does not employ just any idiot.

The engineers at Honda designed these bikes so that the stuff you need to get at often is easily accessible and the stuff you only have to get at every 20 years or so is a bit more difficult to get at.

Would you rather they were like GM and did it the other way around?
