Anybody use the Mech Seal kit from CRC2onlinecatalog.com?
Reply Quote
I came across this mechanical seal kit for the CX500 tonight:

http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/oil_seal_kits.htm#Mechanical

At $24.95 and $6.00 to ship sounds good. But anybody know if these are of good quality? Price wise how would this compare to the Yamaha seal I have read of on here?

I'm pretty sure the Yami kits I've gotten have been under $20 cdn. Are you planning an engine out or using Shep's in bike method?

I've been trying to find more info on the Yami seals - but with the search function not working cant find much.  I had the impression that they only fit "some" CX's due to a difference in diameter, or that the case had to be modified to use them?

My engine is out as I am doing a cam chain and tensioner - so planning on swapping the whole thing.   I did email that CRC2online to ask for dimensions and more info - hope to learn more soon.

The yamaha seal makes it easier to swap out the rubber or not have to repress the metal housing of the honda. There are two honda seal/housings of different sizes but I think the yamaha seal works the same in both.

According to Rob's site, the Yamaha seal will not fit the few CXs that have the smaller (27.8 mm) seal. They will fit the larger (28.3 mm) seals just fine. If you are replacing the whole seal, be prepared to clean up the rear cover extremely well, take everything off, run it through the dishwasher, then put it in the oven for an hour or two. You cannot press fit the seal otherwise (that I know of, and it was tight enough even with the cover at 300 F)

You can press fit the seal by using a large piece of threaded rod and washers. WisconsinCx built a special tool for it.

So - just to make sure I am understanding right - bottom line is, we are not going to be able to buy a 27.8mm Mechanical seal - be it OEM, Yamaha or other wise (unless I hear from CRC2onlinecatalog to the contrary).? If that is the case, that means I either do the reaming out of the bore for the seal - or just do the Shep method. If we do the Shep method - the yami seal will work in a smaller bore case?

If I am correct with all that - then I will simply order the Yami seal. If the Honda OEM seal was available in the smalelr size, then it might be worth going OEM. I dont know yet if we wil ream the case bore out, or just do it the Shep method

Edit - forgot to mention, appears my bore size is the smaller 27.8 (hard to get real accurate using the calipers I have - but it absolutely is not the 28.3 mm size)

Yes, I think you have it right. I don't think the smaller OEM is available from what I've read here.

I've replaced them both ways....leaving the metal in the engine and just popping in a new seal is WAY EASIER!!

And faster and safer :)

And the innards from either the Honda(Davey) or the Yammy will work in this procedure.

I'm thinking it's the Shep method then!

And the Yami seal - though I will still need the oil seal right? (I assume the yamaha part # is just the mechanical seal part only).

You are correct Mike. The Yamaha part number is the mechanical seal only (no oil seal).

To add my $0.02 (though since it is Canadian, it is only worth $0.016 US) I used the Cycle Recycle online catalog to get the new mechanical seal I used on my bike.  In fact, I had to order a second on since I screwed up the original one when trying to remove the metal press-in part.

I did the "in bike" method where you take the guts out of the original seal in the bike leaving the press-in metal part.  Then, with a dremel tool you CAREFULLY cut the metal "cup" off the new seal.  Then, with some water jacket adhesive you glue the new one into the old metal cup.

On my first attempt, I knicked the phenoic part of the new seal making it completely useless.

My advice is to take your time and ssssslllllooooowwwwwlllllyyyy cut the metal "cup" off the new seal.  Take your time, you have all the time in the world to do it right.  It will take you much longer to fix it if you do it wrong.  (I know this from experience).

CRC is a great place and they ship right away.

You don't have to cut the metal part off the mech seal.If you play the heat from a cigarette lighter underneath it it will soften  the silicone based sealant used  and you can then prise the inner out with your fingers/thumbs and the same Blue Hylomar type gasket sealant can be used to seal the new one in.You just have to be careful not to burn your fingers :)

I stared with the lighter but did not take my time.  I thought to my self "this is taking too long, I think cutting would be easier".  Well, I was wrong.  Heating would have been better...

First one I did with a lighter, after trying to boil it out to no avail, and it came out fairly quick.

Second one, I used a propane torch on low, it was a matter of seconds, I heard a sizzle, and the guts easily popped out.

A butane grill lighter has a lower temperature flame that shouldn't damage anything  ... and some of them run almost like a mini blow torch.

Yep, that's a good idea. The torch was easy to use because i could light it and leave it on the bench, hands free. I held the seal in some pliers, and I modulated the heat by distance from the flame, and had another free hand to pull the seal out.
