Fuel Filter

Hi guys,
Finished cleaning the carbs and added a fuel filter two weekends ago and finally got a good enough day to commute to work and I got a very harsh lesson on why it is so important not to put an upward loop in the fuel line . I had pulled off the freeway to take a less traveled path and while waiting for the light to turn green the engine quit. I glanced at the odometer and it had 149 miles so I knew the loop was to blame. I had to push across the intersection to a gas station to fuel up. How embarassing! Oh well, I got it fueled up and rode the rest of the way home. I'm glad I was so close to a station.
For what its worth, the GL runs so much stronger when both cylinders are working together.

I understand running out of gas since I have done it many times but how did the loop in the fuel line make you run out of gas. There was still gas in the tank right. The loop just caused the fuel not to come all the way to the carbs. Simple solution is to eliminate the loop and walla you have gas again. Just trying to clarify you still had gas in the tank.

Blindstitch,
Oh Yea, almost a gallon left. I couldn't work the hose without taking the sidecover off and getting off the bike. It was easier to push/walk the bike across the intersection and get gas. I will fix this this weekend.

Well at least it wasn't a big deal. I ran out of gas once on a six lane interstate in the far left passing lane with no pull off on that side. I was lucky as hell to be able to make my way all the way to the right while the bike was surging sucking up every last drop of gas. The thing that sucked is I actually had a gallon of gas in the tank but the reserve wasn't working. I could blow air into the tank through the fuel hose but none would come out. Problems fixed now. Thank god. But I'm still going to carry my 33 ounce MSR bottle of gas.

I learned the hard way too!
I used a very large filter from a auto-shop. - I looped it, - - It ran for a mile, then topped-out at 40 mph.- - - I sure wish that I had read more post, here, before I did that. - - - - Hint, hint, BS "In-line fuel-filter thread. - Please.
For now, I'm sticking with the small 'cone-shaped air-stone' type filter. I have it as much vertical as I can. That lasted 13 months, with a rusty tank. - (I have read that the right angle full-filters might be better). The metal screen filters do not work.
There is always going to be an air-bubble in the 'GL' filter - - More-so after a long sit, "evaporation ;will happen, in a vented vacuum carb ". - - - After a 3- four day sit, I blow into the petcock drain tube. - "Yea, I know that it sounds weird". And can be misused, but it works; on these GLs. After 5, or more days sitting, I drain the carbs. Hopefully, forehand. - - - But, sometimes after. - And charge a good battery after three weeks.
It works for us.
These bikes were designed to run, - not sit! - - (run it)!
"The loop just caused the fuel not to come all the way to the carbs."
Yea, I did this with a 1/2 a tank. (It only takes, an inch or two, over the bottom of the petcock. to mess it up, bad).

Steve, this may sound like a smart arse comment and I don't mean it like that...
Just to be sure, you do know about the reserve setting on the petcock, right? Sounds to me you may have been on reserve at 150 miles with a gallon left. That is about the height of the "straw" in the tank that is designed to not let you run out of gas.
(just checking)

Just got back from a weekend trip. I almost always get over 200 miles before switching to reserve and begin looking for a station. After filling I reset the odometer. I had just added the fuel filter and had made the commute to work and was on the way home when that happened. I have it fixed now with a downhill slope from the petcock to the carb input.
I have also noticed as did RustyTec that an upward loop is bad.
