A recent thread about travelling on old bikes got me thinking that there should be a list of members willing to render aid to other members who have problems during their travels.  If you want to be on the list (I'll try to keep the first post updated), please respond with your day and evening phone numbers, and what you have to offer.  For example, I can offer garage space, tools, manuals, and a few spares, but I don't have the means to transport a non-runner.  (So, even if you have a truck or trailer, but no garage space, get on the list.)

For security, please do not include your address (that can be given directly by phone.)

Either enable public email in your profile and I'll link your profile to your name or break it up like this: randall (dot) temple (at) bigfoot (dot) com.

Thanks,

R

I suppose I should be on this as you never know when your going to need help. Of course when in need it might be hard to find a computer to get to this list.

Check the list while planning your trip.  Then contact and record the info of the folks who will be close to your route.  I'm including links to each city in GoogleMaps to make it easy to see where everyone is located.

Yeah, I've been thinking that posting phone numbers in regular format along with your full name on a forum that is actively crawled and archived by google probably isn't the best idea.  I'd rather see people e-mail all their info to one person and then that person have a word document or what not available for e-mail upon request to established members.  They could then print out and keep a copy of this with their bike stuff in the event of travel problems. I have similiar feelings about this.  I'm located in central shoreline Connecticut and would be happy to help a traveler in trouble such as I can, but less inclined to post detailed contact info on a public forum.  It's a good idea, and speaks well of our comraderie, it's just the current approach doesn't do it for me.  Perhaps a simpler listing of forum names and approximate locations.  Then when planning a trip email those in the areas you would be traveling to/thru?  My info isn't intended to be secret from you'se guys, but from "them".

I actually think the current set up is fine. My number has been on google for quite some time and I haven't had any problems. Same with tons of email addresses.

I think that special consideration could be given to those who want to keep their numbers secret. I know if I ever get in trouble along the way I may not have a computer and would access this list via my phone.

Cell phone numbers are all unpublished.  Yes, some people may have unpublished home numbers too.  Furthermore some people may not want their private information on the internet and easily searchable.  This may be due to internet related personal qualms or due to the profession in which they may find themselves.

People who object, for whatever reason, to having their full name and contact info online, will obviously refrain from joining this list as its currently setup, even though most would probably be willing and able to lend a hand to a traveler in need.

I think its a great idea and its great to see people joining in!!  Thanks again for your work on this Randall!

I appreciate the security concerns.  That's why I'm not publishing addresses, mapping just to cities and towns, and masking emails.

If someone has an unlisted number and doesn't want it published, it doesn't have to be included.  My intention was that a traveller would need to record only the info pertinent to his trip, contacting members along his planned route before setting out if more info is needed.  There really only needs to be one means of contact to the person offering assistance.  The rest can be collected directly.

If anyone wants his listing changed, just let me know.

Thanks,

R

I know this is already rolling, but some food for thought. BMW, Harley, and Honda Goldwing groups have books with cities and phone numbers with service codes in them without names or addresses. By listing the state first, you can more easily find someone close to you.

For example:
T = for tools
TR = for trailer for hauling
W = for work space
M25 = woud mean 25 miles is what a person is willing to travel to help someone
R = for room
B = for bedroll space
TC = for tent camping in their yard

There are a few others I can't think of right now. That way they can't look you up in a phone book, like if they have your name.

So for me it would read:
Wisconsin, Appleton
920-733-1925
T, W, M25, R, B, TC

Randal,

If you use an alphabetic Excel spread sheet it will automatically put them, by state, in alphabetic order first by state followed by city, so you can look at cities around you on a map if you need help and go from there.

I don't know if there is any copyright on the name, but BMW calls their book the "Anonymous Book."  I think it should be made real clear that anyone can turn down helping anyone for any reason. Just as a FYI in 20+ years in the BMW book I have gotten 3 phone calls and I had to turn down one because I had company at the time, but I referred the person to someone else who I knew from the book.

I know this can work ... and I will find out what letters of code I couldn't remember and get them to you.

Pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to update the thread to David's guidelines. I don't see why we don't just use the User Id's as it wouldn't reveal our names and still lets you know who the person kind of is.

Then later on create another post checking the box that says don't allow replies. Then it can be edited by the creator. I was thinking about doing this again for the quick reference just to make things easier.  Then at the bottom in case this thread gets lost put if you have any ideas or want to be added to the list email or pm this person.

OK, there have been a number of ideas raised.  I'll respond to each separately.

Spreadsheet:
While a spreadsheet would be useful, I think transferring the info back to the thread each time there's a change would be more work than alphabetizing manually.  I have no intention of making a printed book from this.  I wanted this to be accessible on the forum without downloading a pdf or needing Excel.  I could do it as a pdf download, but it's a lot more work to update.

Assistance codes:
I don't see the need.  Codes are OK in a printed list, but online I hate having to scroll to the top or bottom of a page to find the key.  I've tried to keep them to one line.

Personal info:
I'll include as much or as little information as the source wants posted.  If it's just location, handle, and a bot-proof email or phone number, that's fine by me.  I can remove last names from the standard format, if there's enough concern over that.  I like including first names, so you know who to ask for when you call.

Locked thread:
Not a bad idea, but right now, it's this discussion that keeps the thread where people can see it.  A locked thread would fall off the first screen pretty quickly.  If we can get it stickied, I'll transfer the list to a new locked thread and delete this one.

Thanks again,

R

wildmanwill-

Yes, David in Atlanta was EXTREMELY helpful in basically fixing everything that was wrong with my bike (and there seemed to be a lot more as his eyes moved over it).  I can't speak for him to say that he'll help out anyone/everyone, but I'll never forget the help that I kindly received from him. All that I can do is to pass on his kindness to other travelers.

I think there are a few people on this form that know I like to "Pay it Forward" when I can. I just hope they do likewise when they get the chance.

If you pay it forward you will feel good and probably make a friend for life to boot! I just did a quick count of my incomplete list and I quickly saw 70+ people who I have mentored on CX/GLs through the years now. I feel more blessed than taxed for the help I have been able to give.

Try it ... you'll like it.

Aye Stitch - I'm gonna have to print the list for my summer rides around the U.S. to my way to Hawaii for the winter <grin> ..... now, if anyone from the list (including Gene & Don) - again, happen to get really lost and end up nearby Halifax N.S. Canada ....... I'll find space in my kitchen or backyard or front driveways to work on the bikes - and have 2 spare CX500 motors plus multiple parts - and if you break down on the weekend - I usually have a fridge full of beer n' lobster (fore sure: if you forewarn me) .... and after a dozen brews you won't mind sleeping with my doggie <LOL> .....

Cheers,

Bryan,

Do we have to break down to get the lobster or can we just stop by for it??? My wife and I love NS, except for the black flies which love her and don't hardly bother me. The best sticky buns (pecan sweet rolls) I ever ate are in NS about 100 yards from the ocean.

Aye Dave - you can always pull into the driveway and pull off a coil wire <grin> ...... n' see how long it takes for me to figure out the problem ???  Surely after a few cold ones n' some mussel appetizers - whilst the lobsters boil ..... My home isn't fancy but it's "home" and a thousand yards from the ocean !!!

Black flies only bother me when I'm deep in the woods fishin' for trout ..... or occasionally a swarm hit me whilst ridin' the shoreline - but the worst is being hit by a big ol' bumble bee -

Bryan,

My wife won't eat venison! I like it. She will eat lobster. When we travel together, we do it on the BMW and to be honest I have never even seen the coils (if indeed it even has coils) on the bike. She refers to her seat at the Lazy Boy seat. It has a heat seat and backrest on it. She is getting so particular she won't even ride on the Honda any more ... but she will ride by herself on a little KZ440LTD a few times a year.

We were camped within spitting distance of Peggy's Cove when Marci met the black flies. for the first time. I looked at her and told her to wipe her face ... and her hand came away all bloody. She soon learned that when they took a bite she couldn't feel it until the blood started running down her face. I had warned her and she didn't believe me. She learned quickly what can happen. Here is a thumbnail to click on to see what she did to protect herself.

It was about 80 degrees and he had on long sock, her rain suit, a big hat with mosqito netting and gloves. She still got a few bites. I wore a t shirt, shorts and a baseball cap and I only got bit twice.

The scenery was awesome though and we loved it there and are definitely are going back, but we will make sure the big hatch is over before we go again.

Here are a couple of other thumbnails from that trip. Just click if you want to see a larger version of the photo.
