I'm trying to wrap my head around what in the hell a rotor puller is. Do you need one to pull the flywheel? Is this something that can be done with a socket wrench? I'm confused. -nick

I asked the same question a few months ago when I had my engine out. I ended up ordering one from Bike Bandit. It was 20mm x 1.5 for my 82 Custom. Here are a couple of answers I got:
"I just replaced my cam chain not a month ago as part of a triple bypass. I used something just like this to pull my flywheel. The one I purchased was a very tight fit into the rotor but the thread is indeed right. You'll want a helper to hold the rotor stationary while you screw in the puller until it just seats. Give it half a dozen or so healthy whacks with a metal sledge hammer. Just don't miss and whack the flywheel - that would be bad"
And, "I purchased a bolt at a local farm equipment company. To determine the size I took an inside measurement with my calipers of the threads in the flywheel. I then got a fine thread bolt slightly larger. It was correct. Bolt and un-needed nut for five dollars. To hold the flywheel I improvized a strap wrench from a strip of nylon strap long enough to wrap around the flywheel twice. I ran one end through a d-ring and back on itself and secured it with a couple of wire twists. It wanted slip on the flywheel untill I folded some 400 grit sandpaper so the rough sides were out and put it against the flywheel and then wrapped the strap around and put a short bar through the d-ring. I greased the threads of the bolt and the end which pushed against the statioary flywheel and put what torque I could on it. I then tapped the end off the bolt/puller and the flywheel came off easily.
If you cannot picture the strap wrench I could post a picture later."

Thanks, Stitch. I use IE and can't figure out how to post pictures or make clickable links.

Ahhh... I think I'm beginning to get what is happening here. I need something threaded to fit into the threaded hole after I take out the flywheel bolt... is that it? So a rotor puller is just a threaded piece of metal that threads into a hole for a bolt so that you can pull the flywheel... am I close? -nick
edit: so it looks like anything that is 20mm x 1.5 right hand male will do the trick... is that right? I see one at bikebandit for $8, I just want to make sure that is what I need before I buy it.

Nick,
You've got it! If you use an impact wrench it will almost fly off of there. I usually just get it good and tight and hit it with a hammer and it is loose.

So if I can find a 20mm bolt with 1.5mm threading, that's all I need, correct? The supply shop in Oly has some weird size bolts, I might give that place a try just on the off chance. -nick

After about five auto supply shops I found the right bolt at a farm equipment place that specializes in tractors and other heavy equipment.

Well, we have Fastenal and Tacoma Screw around here, I don't know why I didn't think of it before. 20mm x 1.5 by 1 inch... $3. Beautiful, I just got one, save more than $10 over buying it online.
The problem? 30mm socket? $15. Didn't think about that :).
The solution? Tacoma screw will take anything back with the receipt for a full refund as long as it can be re-sold.
All told, as long as the socket and bolt look like they did when I bought them (and why wouldn't they?) the rotor puller + the 30mm socket will cost me NOTHING!
Yippie! Now to Home Depot to "borrow" a strap wrench. Gotta love these return policies :) -nick

may not make any friends here, but, being in retail mngmnt all my life i feel this is just wrong.
you bought it to use, saved all that shop labor fee and you still plan to return items that saved you more money tha you spent for the tools.
my rant for the day

Nick,
You could use a Cresent wrench on the bolt. You could probably buy the strap wrench for the cost of the gas. Harbor Freight has two sizes in the package for $9.95.

I'm not going to pretend like doing what I described is a moral high ground thing. I've planned on doing it a few times with Home Depot and ended up just keeping the stuff, hence the Ryobi circular saw I still have (for a Ryobi it really doesn't suck half as bad as I thought it would).
I hadn't thought about the crescent wrench and the strap wrench is something I'd like to own... thanks Dave. Just a week or so more and I can finally attack this thing!
Oh, and my buddy just dropped his bug motor. Took less than 30 minutes. In two more hours he had the whole thing stripped to the block and pistons. God those things are simple. I want one! Well, a bus, not a bug. Maybe both :). -nick

with regards to returning tools... for money back... you are at the wrong dealerships. There are a lot of places (Canadian tire for us!) that will lend speciality tools with a credit card deposit. Only one catch usually, they would like you to buy the parts from them.
