hard starting -solution
Reply Quote
I had noticed over the past month or so that the old cx was getting hard to start. Checked all voltages and charging circuit and all was fine. Did a check on all wiring and found no corrosions.MMMM. Battery was charged and was holding current...mmm. I had a mate listen to the start up of my bike ,instead of firing first kick as she allways did, she was taking three maybe four goes to get her running. Then on the weekend BANG she backfired one of the baffles clean out of the exhaust.mmmm.not good. Anyhow solution was easy....replaced a tired Starter motor with a known good one...now starts first kick and like a dream...must have been like this for years as I do not remeber the bike starting so well...So if your old girl will not start as well as she used to ,dont replace the battery straight away..do your measurements first... as you may only be bypassing the problem of your starter having a bit of carbon build up.Next is to clean up the replaced starter so I have a spare again.

Good advice and good post.I have two spare serviced starter motors.Dunno why but I really like stripping them and returning them to a good state. They are of incredible quality IMHO and it's my understanding from posts on here that they are superior to the ones fitted to the 650s and are a direct swap.

Could someone maybe create a step by step post on getting the starter off and how to disassemble and clean it up ??  Would be a good project for us to do while bike is down for other reasons anyway.

I know the procedure is in the manual but sometimes it's a much easier read and learn with the verbage and pics you experts provide.

:)

Starter motors like carbs are another neglected area of these bikes and may not have been touched for years. It only takes a little effort to bring them back from an early grave and you don't have to service them again for ages and it will help with easier starting :)

That's a great "how to" Shep!  I can't add any info to what you've already done, but here's a few pictures of what a starter can look like and how it can come back from the dead.  This one was left outside for who knows how long and was so rusted it wouldn't rotate at all, but after a cleaning seems to be working great!  Below that is a picture of all the parts for it, mine had 6 washers in it, 3 on each end with the thicker one sandwiched between 2 thinner ones.
