What oil filters will work on our bikes. I'm planning on throwing this into the quick reference. So Wix, Fram, you name it.

The oil filters are a standard OF02 HF111 Pattern Oil Filter

The HF111 is the key code at least here in the UK.

I have been using the EMGO from JC Whitney (and obviously other sources) with no negative issues.

Have any of the rest of you ever read anything bad about Fram filters?  I read the "classic" oil filter test that said Fram filters where crap, but other than that I really don't have any reason to dis-like them.  I know many say Honda OEM is the only way to go, but I don't wait for the 7500 mile manual recommended mileage, I will probably end up changing the filter either every 3 months/ 3000 miles like I do my truck.

You know I read that a while back but I don't care. People hate all types of filters for different reason. Last week I made a deal with a guy for a lot of stuff for $25. Along with the stuff I picked up 9 fram filters with rubbers. I change my filters often so I'll report back after I burn through a few. They don't look much different than honda's and at $8 a piece at the dealer I could say I saved myself about $70 picking up the frams, saddlebags, two cx manuals, hbox covers, 5 quarts of oil and some other crap.

Not every Wal-Mart offers the same things. The ones around where I live (NC Iowa) have a few Fram motorcycle oil filters, but not the 6007 for my bike. I have been getting mine from a farm supply store (Mills Fleet & Farm) which has a surprisingly good bunch of oil filters for many different kinds of bikes.

I change engine oil at 2,000 miles. I figure that use in a high-rev motorcycle qualifies as "severe duty". The only thing more severe I can think of would be aircraft.

I definitely remember when these bikes were new, there was a large poster hanging on the parts department wall, warning customers of damage to engines using other than Honda oil filters. Now I realize that was years ago and replacement filters have probably improved, but I have never used anything other than OEM filters. I also only use Honda's anti-freeze, but that's another subject. We're not talking big money here! If you don't have a local Honda dealer, order a bunch online to spread out the shipping cost. They have a long shelf life. Just an old geezer's opinion.

Just an interesting side note: Aircraft oil filters don't go through half the stress that a motorcycle filter does. Once having started and taken off, an aircraft engine is generally run at constant RPM. Constant RPM means you can optimize everything in the engine system, including the oil filter, to work perfectly. A motorcycle engine can go from an idle around 1000 all the way to nearly 10k? That is a lot of totally different things to try to optimize for.

Len, that poster was there for the sole purpose of scaring you in to paying Stealership OEM prices.

My thoughts exactly Shep, Honda don't make oil filters themselves and may well source the cheapest supplier that reaches their specs.

High flow can mean one of two things:

1) More pleated filter media to provide more surface area thus less overall resistance to flow.

2) More porous filter media thus less overall resistance to flow but being more porous it won't filter the smaller particles as well.

And let's not forget, given that the purpose of filters is to remove imperfections from the oil, that the absolute best "filter solution" is just to absolutely, positively remove 100% of the imperfections from the oil, by removing the oil from the engine and replacing it with new oil.

Changing your oil every 1,000 miles (or less) will do more for your engine than worrying about oil filter brands will ever do - even if you only bought one oil filter a year for the entire life of the bike.

Certainly your privilege - but I worked in parts for 15+ years, parts stores and dealerships, and it's the truth.

Think about it this way - if you needed an operation, would you go to a general practitioner, or a specialist whose entire income was derived from the field of expertise you needed? Most people would choose the expert.

The manufacturer is not the expert (no matter how counter-intuitive that seems) they don't even make any of their own parts! They just write the specs, buy the parts from contractors, and assemble the product. Filter manufacturer like Fram make 100% of their income from making filters - it's all they do, and all they think about. If you derive 100 % of your income from filters - if you screw it up, all your income goes away.

Although this may be a bit extreme it's THE best advice given in this thread :)
I change my oil around 3,000/4,000 miles which is half the recommended service point and sometime even before :)

I use Fram in my car, truck and motorcycle and have never had a problem.  I also change every 3K, regardless of what the manual says.  I can see it mattering a lot more at the 7500 mile point... I don't care what filter you're using, your oil is gonna look like tar at that point.  I'll change the oil twice as often and drive the engine twice as long, thanks.

The motorcycles always tell me when it's time for an oil change - shifts start getting stiff.  Or the color of the oil suggests a change.  Usually it's around 3000 miles, although I did get 5000 out of synthetic in the Shadow on a couple of occasions before the shifting went downhill.

I generally change oil seasonally in the cars.  That seems to work out to 4000-6000 miles/change.  If it uses little enough, I'll go to synthetic and change it once a year, with an oil analysis at the 6000 mile point to make sure it'll be OK.

I swap filters every other change on the bike, though I do remove the filter to drain the dirty oil out and inspect it.  With cars, I tend to change filters every change of oil, although this probably isn't necessary unless the car is using synthetic.

The bike gets whatever filter I can find cheap.  The cars get something good - really good if I'm going to synthetic.  The NAPA silver and gold filters are my favorites because they're good, widely available and (comparatively) cheap.  Wix filters are the same, of course, but harder to find.

I think it just depends on the shape of the previous ones and whether a new one came with the filter or not.  If you buy the OEM from Honda and it has the o rings included might as well just change them, but if you buy an aftermarket filter and it doesn't come with o rings, I wouldn't worry too much.

Disclaimer, I'm a part time register jockey at a parts store, fulfilling several of those stereotypes, and also a bit of a cheap bastard. I've had several filters apart and there is a noticeable difference in filter construction. Fram filters are definitely of lower quality construction and materials than average. The 2 best things about Frams are the grippy black coating and the image they have somehow built through advertising, but their filter media and end caps are undeniably subpar. That being said, it is quite possible to use them exclusively and never have any complaints, and some of the deficiencies in quality are also irrelevant for cartridge filters like those for our bikes. I'd seriously consider reusing a Wix or Napa Gold once before putting on a Fram though.

If only more than 1 would run correctly at any given time I'd be set.

There aren't many places around here that I can get to when they are open without making an hour and a half Saturday morning trip. I'll do that if I need other parts too, but not for just an oil filter so I used to buy them from my favourite local auto parts guy if I had to. The problem is he can only get Fram, so when I saw that site I stopped doing that.

These days, if I need a filter and can't get to the town with the Honda dealer, I hand my wife a note and she picks one up for me the next time she is near there and has time. Sometimes it takes over a week so I have to plan ahead, but I feel it's worth it.

Sometimes I envy the Ural guys - they can get OEM filters for about $3 or 4 each if they buy them by the case online from Russia. But then, they have to change the oil twice as often too....

Any of you guys notice a different part number on Puralator filters? For years I have used their ML 16807, but when I went to order a few more recently it appears this part number now refers to a cartridge filter. Peculiar. Guess I'll just switch brands.

just a bit of useless knowledge with minor relevance, Champion makes Harley-Davidson's oil filters

I ordered a batch of Hi-Flo filters and they seem pretty hefty. I'll be using those up for the next year and a half or so
