CX 500 restore. Getting close to the end!!!!
|
|
|

Well, someone stole my camera, so posting any pics yet is not possible. i wont be starting on it till winter, i want to ride it around and make sure it is mechanically sound before i go wild with it.
I plan to powdercoat (or paint) the frame red, along with red highlights on the wheels. anything chrome that can be cleaned up will be, and stuff that wont clean up nice will get painted either red, black, or a pearlescent white.
as for the tank/side covers, i plan on a 3 stage pearl white of some kind, havent decided yet. over the white, i will have some custom airbrushing done, with flames, and possibly skulls. the outcome should be something to this effect, just over a different background color. I might go with a blue flame instead of red, and still go with the red accents, not sure yet. any input would be great, just trying to visualize what i want to do with this.

it needs new silencers, no big deal, i found a company on Ebay repopping really nice ones for about 200 a pair plus shipping..
wont really start on it until riding season is over, but it should look awesome when i get done with it.

That is correct! same style of flame, over a different color background.
color scheme is up in the air. i want black and red, but black is a PITA to keep clean. so, im just trying to get another color to go with red, or have those flames in a blue instead. but, we havent experimented with changing the colors of the flames, so idk how going from red to blue will turn out.

I apologize... I guess I didn't read that carefully enough...
But I do agree with CaTacL1sm, silver with red flames would be pretty b1tch1n... especially if you're goin for a racer stlyed look... and make sure to put lots of metallic in there so she'll POP!...DO IT!! DO IT!! DO IT!!

hmm.......silver on red flames with a red frame and red trim pieces......i like it. some kind of wild metallic would be very possible, and very sharp.
another good look i thought up was yellow w/red flames on a black frame/trim. with yellow worked into the wheels.

I think (in MY opinion) you should go with the Super metallic silver and red flames with a fair amount of black shading behind and past the flames... It might even end up looking like your bike is burning going down the road...SWEET!

well, pretty much anything that needs repainted, or is to a point where the chrome doesnt clean up will get red. maybe a little black thrown in for some of the trim, not sure yet.

Nah, do it on a black background with triple Blue flames, and a lick of silver.
BTW, nice work with the airbrush, Man.

thanks! but its my uncle's work, not mine. i will learn when i get some time though :D
my preferred color choice would be red and black with some chrome thrown in, but theres 2 things wrong with that idea.
one is that red/black seems to be fairly common, and black is a biach to keep clean.

A late night thought...
I think a nice candy apple red metallic with light white flames would look nice too...

well, color scheme is still up in the air. ive decided not to go all out with the airbrushing this time, as everything ive redone all out in the past wound up getting flipped a short while after. so this beast will get a rattle can job. but rest assured, I can lay one hell of a job with a rattle can. you guys will think its a auto-paint grade job when its done ;)
i will decide a final color scheme tomorrow at Home Depot when i look at the shades of colors available.
There HAS to be an easier way to get the motor out. taking it out with the WHOLE driveshaft SUCKED, the motor is HEAVY, and doing it trashed is a PITA. took just under 2 hours to get it tore down quite a bit and get the motor out. not too bad for the first time ive disassembled her :) granted, it isnt the first bike ive torn apart though. i;d say 45 minutes of the disassemble was sitting there drinking and thinking what had to come off next so i could just unbolt the motor and drop it.
progress so far: Tomorrow it will be down to the frame and the frame will be prepped and painted with any luck.
Labeling the wires as i unplug them

Seat and tank off

Grab bar off, and a few other odds and ends.

Electric fan conversion, radiator, and motor OUT.

like I said, there has to be an easier way to get the motor out, as far as the driveshaft is concerned. if not, re-assembling it is gonna SUCK. other than the driveshaft, it was pretty simple. Carbs are gonns get a go-through, as the overflow on the left side leaks like crazy sometimes and sometimes i get a high-rpm bog when i open the throttle more. pulling the choke and fiddling with it cures it, as if its starving of fuel sometimes.
if cash allows, it will get a cam chain/tensioner service, new tranny, new stator, new coils, in that order. any suggestions on the electrical? also, the tach drive seal is leaking, any suggestions? i have researched it quite a bit on this forum, all i am really looking for is where to get the seal. i replaced the shift shaft seal already, i have a new oil filter, filter bolt, air filter. i need to get a camshaft seal, when i replaced it, i messed it up and it leaks a little now. no big deal, easy fixed.
possible color schemes include green/black monster theme, red/black, black/yellow, yellow/purple.
Let me know what you think, and input freely, i am open to all suggestions. motor runs strong, so it doesnt need a top end. maybe a valve adjustment, but i have no ides how do do that. i am used to working on 2 stroke bikes :D

if you pull the drive shaft boot back from the engine side you will find a bolt in the shaft, remove this and tha shaft will slide off, much easier and you can do this on the bike so shaft stays behind,
and i will be spraying mine in repsol blue with orange frame later this year, hopefully.

Sounds like you have trash in the carbs and seats. Make sure you put a filter inline on reassembly
Also, your higher speed bogging maybe a vacuum leak on the left intake or line to the vacuum fuel shutoff. High speed runs can cause the fuel to almost shut off.
As to paint, You can get auto grade paint put into spray cans at some Carquest's and Napa's
Color with flames, I would go with a nice silver or smoky silver with blue or blue & white flames. But that's me.
Good luck!

lmao, the green is only for frame/accent. tank, shrouds, and others will be black.
basically, i was looking for something completely different. and a Monster Energy edition CX500 is definitely different.

NightBiker07,
Will you be making other mods besides color change to make the Monster Energy edition?

yes. I am ordering a few custom green chrome decals for it. Other than that, i dunno what else to do. I dont want to get into any major performance modifications, i hate jetting, and since getting to the carbs on this thing is a pain, i have no desire to ever attempt to rejet it. I may as well call it a Hondawasaki!

Performance would be easy....send the heads out to get hogged out for larger valves and porting, modern carbs, have the head shaved for high compression, send crank somewhere to be stroked and balanced and then the rod shortened so the piston comes to the same height in the cylinder as before the stroking, as running a cylinder spacer plate is not possible with this thing. I am quite sure you could get a sleeve that you could get stuffed into the block, and have wiseco make you some one-off pistons, upgrade the igniton system to something a bit more modern......there just arent any simple bolt on options.
like i said, it can be done easily enough. any performance machining shop could do it easy. but its gonna cost some CASH. i bet the stroking of the crank and shortening of the rods would be 2 grand alone.....porting would be around 5-600 because of there being 2 heads....modifying the heads to run larger valves would be EXPENSIVE, shaving the heads for high compression would be fairly cheap, maybe 60 bucks a head.
but by the time you got done, you'd have a 100 horse, 700CC CX500 motor that liked to burn up clutches, spit out trannies, and run on alcohol. i bet it would be a thrill to ride though, and it sure would piss a lot of people off.
i bet getting some portwork, upgrading the carbs and ignition would yield 20 horses easy as you would be upgrading a lot of old technology, and you could be out of it for 1200 bucks or less.

I think what Barry is saying on the short side is the basic mods will get you nowhere and the expensive mods will leave you with a $600 sh*t pump. There is a reason people buy these bikes. It's because they are dependable.
Barry and myself have often looked at bikes on craigslist in ok condition needing some work and running the figures you just get a bike that's slightly better and could only sell for the same price it was picked up for.
For the same price of all those crazy mods you could probably buy a bike that has that horsepower to start with and still have money to do some of them.
1979 CX500 Supertanker ATGATT makes riding a bike like a sled easier.

Man, so many people buy a CX and think its a GSX.
It never will be a fast bike, never was a fast bike. It is what it is, a 500cc two cylinder, built in the late seventies.
Too heavy to jump, too slow to race, but, the most reliable bike ever, if treated with respect. Its reliability, endurance and mileage are from the way it was built in the factory. You change something....you lose something.
Having said that, its a free country.......do whatever you like. I cut my CX into fifty pieces and slowly rebuilt it into a chopper/custom. .....I'm going back under my rock now.

LMAO...so true...but then again why bother will ALL those mods when you can fit NOS in 30min easy and have 10-20-13-60-100hp at the flick of a switch.. use a progressive controller and it won't break the engine on the first run..hehe...1st run I point out...hehe....
CX500 is a classic cruiser/tourer....nothing more, nothing less.....

I wouldnt say the CX is slow by any means. it runs side by side to my cousins 98? cubic inch Heritage Softtail with a stage 1 power up kit. i can only imagine a CB750 would absolutely dominate it.

With all due respect... Harleys are slow. That's not meant to be a knock on Harleys -- they're designed to be slow.
They're heavy, with engines that are de-tuned for high torque & low HP. Harleys can be made fast -- look at Buells. (All but the very last were Harley-powered.) You can also build-up a Harley to make it fast, but it would be a lot more involved than a just a jet kit.

I know harleys arent fast, but since i ride with all harley guys, they all think they are fast, and i run right next to them. it irritates them to say the least.
as far as fast bikes are concerned, your right, the thing is dead ass slow. my dirtbike pushes the same power with half the CC's and half the wight. that thing is fast.

If you want to see a harley guy break his neck doing a double take go pick up something like a vt1100 somewhere around 1983. It's a cruiser and won't look out of place smoking them at every stop.
But then again the way some of these harley guys ride bikes a honda rebel could beat them out.

Oh my god you must be sick. Now you know you can't get away with finishing the bike without painting the body panels with a bit of green or yellow.

More progress tonight
besides, look at a shot of the bike before I tore into it. How much of that startling green frame are we really going to see?

Don't forget to ground down the paint on the natural grounds at the negative battery cable and cdi box.

I got the decals a few days ago. here they are. the big one is fo the top of the tank, the 2 Monster's are for the sides, and the 2 smaller M's are for the side panels. all decals will go over a black base, underneath the clear coat. the second pic is what the material looks like........its like SEX, the pic doesnt do it justice. Stay tuned for the gauges.....i already have the plates mailed off to my guy to work his magic. I will be mailing 9 parts out to be polished. that will halt most assembly until I get the carbs back. In the meantime, i will be cleaning parts, and painting small pieces.
